BILLY Barr felt his side put in one of their best performances of the season to book their place in round five of the FA Youth Cup.

Rovers Under-18s dominated from start to finish against Watford, but only had a 2-0 margin to show for it courtesy of a Callum Wright penalty and Dan Butterworth strike.

Both goals came in the first-half, with Barr believing his side could have kicked on after the break and won by a bigger margin.

But he was still delighted with the win which sets up another tie at Ewood Park against Nottingham Forest.

When asked if it was as good as his side have been this season, Barr said: “First half, the first game of the season we were really good as well.

“The second half I thought we were sloppy at times and probably couldn’t get our foot back on the gas, Watford came out better as well.

“But it’s pleasing we’re through, another victory, another clean sheet and we look forward to the next round.”

It was two of Rovers’ more experienced players who got the goals on the night for Barr’s side.

Wright won, and then scored from the spot, sending the keeper the wrong way and was excellent throughout.

Butterworth, moments before half-time, got his name on the scoresheet, turning from close range as the visitors failed to clear a corner.

Sam Barnes, Butterworth and Jack Vale were all guilty of missing good opportunities to extend the lead, but Barr was happy with their defensive effort, with goalkeeper Matthew Campbell untroubled all night.

Barr added: “Half-time probably came at a good time for them and a bad time for us.

“Under-18s football, they forget things and the gameplan was to do exactly what we had done in the first half.

“It didn’t happen the way we would’ve liked but we got the clean sheet and the victory.

“First half Dan got through a few times and doesn’t pull his shot quick enough. The conditions meant we were hoping for shots, with a slippery surface, test the keeper.

“The one time we did that the keeper saves and Sam Barnes puts over the bar from a yard.

“Overall, we’re more than pleased, especially with the first half.”
