STRIKER Matt Derbyshire is confident Rovers can finish off FK Vetra at Ewood Park tomorrow.

Mark Hughes' side go into the Intertoto Cup, third round, second leg tie with a two-goal lead thanks strikes from Benni McCarthy and the Under-21 international.

It puts Rovers just one game away from the Uefa Cup group stages and into European competition for the second consecutive season.

And Derbyshire, who scored 10 goals in all competitions last season, is hoping to play a part and fire Rovers to a convincing home win.

He said: "I got on for the last 25 minutes, but I managed to get myself a goal - my first European goal.

"I was really pleased about that. It was superb just to be involved, but hopefully now we can finish the job.

"Rovers are a massive club and belong in European competition.

"The gaffer wants to win things and we stand a better chance the more competitions we are in."

Rovers were clinical in executing the first part of the plan against the Lithuanian side at the Vetra Stadium, with a capacity of just 5,900, but Derbyshire says there can be no complacency tomorrow.

He said: "Playing over there was strange, but when you play in Europe, you have to be ready for anything and be professional.

"We ground out a win and we're happy to go back to Ewood with a 2-0 advantage.

"We didn't play well, but we got the job done."

He added: "They were a pretty decent side. They were fitter than us, but we're just easing into the season.

"They showed us enough that they are potentially a threat in the second leg so we we have to be professional.

"There is a bit of pressure on us because we don't want to lose to underdogs so we must go into the game focused."

A hardy band of Rovers fans made the trip to Vilnius last weekend to cheer on the team and Derbyshire said he hoped that the fans would turn out in force at Ewood tomorrow.

He added: "The fans were brilliant They made a lot of noise and they really helped us - as they did all last season.

"They've been brilliant in all the pre-season games and I just hope they come out in force this season."

Rovers went into the tie against the Lithunian side with the likes of Andre Ooijer and Robbie Savage back in the side after injury.

And with Steven Reid recovering fast from his anterior cruciate ligament injury, Derbyshire reckons Rovers are better equipped for a tilt at the Uefa Cup this season.

And he believes last season's exit at the hands of Bayer Leverkusen will give Rovers extra incentive if any were needed.

"If you lose any football match it hurts." he said. "There wasn't much in front of us, but all you can do is pick yourself up and go again.

"We have a good squad and I believe we have the players to go a long way in Europe this season."
