ROVERS striker Matt Derbyshire has vowed to enhance to his budding reputation this season - as long as he gets his chance to shine.

The Blackburn-born hitman burst onto the scene in the last campaign scoring 10 goals in all competitions - five of which came in the Premier League.

His form was such that he was included in Stuart Pearce's England Under-21 squad for the first time in March where he scored in the 3-3 draw in the first game at the new Wembley against Italy.

He also got a goal in the Euro Under-21 Championships in Holland in the summer, scoring in the 2-0 win over Serbia in Nijmegen.

And the former Great Harwood Town striker has hit the ground running in the new campaign, grabbing Rovers' second in the 2-0 win over FK Vetra in Vilnius last Sunday.

Now the young star is pleading for more opportunities to show what he can do as competition will be hotter than ever with Maceo Rigters joining the Rovers and the club in the market for another striker.

Derbyshire, who is hoping to start in the Intertoto Cup, third round, second leg tie, tomorrow, said: "People may doubt me, and that's fair enough, but all I can do is show them what I can do.

"To do that, I have to score goals. And to score goals, I have to play games. If I don't play I can't do anything. I just hope to get the games to answer a few people.

"We've got the new signings in and getting back the injured players - they are like new signings.

"We've got a great squad and we should be aiming for the top ten or even higher.

"Competition is going to be stronger than ever and I just hope to play as much as I can."
