ROVERS have had offers for a transfer target knocked back this week while they also await responses to their loan enquiries.

Boss Tony Mowbray is looking to add to his squad before Thursday’s deadline, particularly defensively, but is eyeing reinforcements in all areas of the pitch.

Mowbray revealed Rovers have had two bids knocked back for a player and admits it is something of a waiting game with regards to loan targets.

“We are working hard on that but when it comes to this stage it becomes like a domino effect really,” he said.

“Teams above us in the chain are waiting on getting players in which will then release the players that we’re asking about to potentially come out.

“We’ve have a bid or two in for a player, we’re looking to spend some money, but they have been knocked back.

“Conversations are going on, as they are with managers about loaning some of their young players.

“That comes down to getting the players they want and then they will let their young players out.

“I would hope that we get some players in the next week, we are working hard, but some of that depends on other clubs.”

Rovers were hoping to add a midfielder to their ranks earlier this month, but saw a move for West Brom midfielder Rakeem Harper fall through after he made his Premier League debut against Bournemouth on August 12.

That could be a deal Rovers visit ahead of Thursday, with Mowbray also looking to bring in a new defender, with Paul Caddis the only defensive addition so far in this transfer window.

“It’s where you go next,” Mowbray said after seeing the bids turned down.

“Choice one, if you can’t get choice one because they’re not selling, choice two, can you get him? They might want too much money.

“It’s then about how far down your list of targets do you go?

“There’s a frustration when you make a monetary bid for a footballer and it gets knocked back, if they are refusing to sell, that’s ok.

“It’s happened the other way with us as well of course.

“It’s not as if we have got tens of millions to spend and you can keep making offer after offer, when they say a player is not for sale after one or two bids no means no and we move on.”

Mowbray admits he is relaxed about his transfer dealings, having made nine signings already in this window.

But having been hit by a number of injuries already this season, he would still look to see more competition for places.

“The evidence of Wednesday night there were no changes in the defensive area because we didn’t have any fit defenders to replace anyone with,” he said.

“There were no opportunities to change any defensive players, so we are looking to add a player or two.

“Every manager wants to create competition in every position and if the right player comes along that can improve our group and our starting XI we will try and do that.

“We are waiting for other clubs to come up with a yes on either the offers or discussions about loans.”
