CLARETS full-back Stephen Ward has promised fans no-one in the Turf Moor dressing room is getting complacent about the prospect of staying in the top flight.

Sean Dyche’s side look set to beat the drop and achieve something they failed to do on the last two occasions they reached the Premier League – stay there for more than one season.

Burnley already have 36 points this campaign, three more than they collected in the entire 2014-15 season when they fell five short of safety.

But Ward insists the focus is strictly on a trip to Goodison Park this Saturday, where the Clarets face a Toffees team still harbouring hopes of European football.

“We’re not talking about anything like that at the minute; we’re just talking about Everton,” said the Republic of Ireland international when asked about his side looking likely to avoid relegation.

“The manager says it here, it’s an old cliche, but time after time we’re only looking at the next game.

“The aim is to always stay in the league and finish as high as you can, and we know that we’ve given ourselves a good platform to do that, but there’s still a lot of work to do.

“We are that type of group that concentrates on ourselves.

“Strange results happen at this stage of the season. You only have to look at Crystal Palace going to Chelsea and getting a great result.

“We’ll be on our mettle and make sure that we do our job.”

Burnley are still yet to win away from Turf Moor this season and, for Ward, Goodison Park would be a great place to break that duck as it’s a ground he enjoys performing at – but he knows it will be tough

“It’s great. Goodison Park is right up there,” he added. “It’s got that history and Everton are a fantastic side on a good run at the minute.

“We’ll have to be on our game but we’ll look forward to the challenge.

“Every week it’s going to be tough because you’re up against world class players and different styles and different players.

“We’ll do our homework in the week and get prepared again because we’re not assured of safety yet and we need to keep fighting in every game.

“At the minute we just want to try and be as tight a unit as we can.

“We’ve come up against different combinations and different players every week and at the minute we’re defending well as a unit.

“It was another clean sheet at Middlesbrough and hopefully we can build on that when we go to Everton.”

Last weekend’s goalless draw at the Riverside looked like a chance wasted to get that elusive debut win on the road against a Boro team second-bottom of the table and without a win in six.

But Ward is taking the positives.

He said: “We’re a little bit disappointed that we didn’t win it with the chances that we had in the second half, but they had a few as well so all in all it was a strong away performance and a good point.

“At half-time we were a little bit disappointed that we didn’t create more with the possession that we had, we were a bit sloppy.

“But in the second half we came out and rectified that and had them on the rack for 10 to 15 minutes, but the chances just didn’t go in.

“They had a go at the end and nearly got one themselves. It’s a good point and now we can move on with another point towards safety.”
