TONY Mowbray is calling on Blackburn Rovers supporters to play their part in the push for survival.

Rovers host Barnsley tomorrow (3pm) in the first of six remaining games as they look to make up a one-point deficit to safety.

And Mowbray is calling on anyone with ‘Rovers in their heart’ to come along to Ewood and back the team.

Rovers have suffered back-to-back defeats at promotion chasers Brighton and Reading but have taken eight points from a possible 12 on home turf since Mowbray took over as head coach.

“Hopefully it’s going to be an exciting final six games, one we should embrace, and one that I would almost appeal to the supporters and anyone with a Rovers heart under their shirt to come and support their team,” Mowbray said.

“In our hour of need when we need them, as in every game there will be spells where it’s backs to the wall, and we need everyone showing their support for the 11 lads on the pitch at that time to get the job done.

“We have six games to go, we shouldn’t be afraid of it, we should be looking forward to it but understanding that it will be another tough game.

“Barnsley are a young team who will give everything they have got and we have to make sure we stand up to their work ethic and hopefully use our quality to win the match.”

Mowbray feels there has been a positive environment around the club since he arrived, and despite being in the bottom three his side still have their destiny in their own hands.

They face Bristol City and Nottingham Forest, the two sides directly above them in the table, over the Easter weekend but Mowbray is focusing on Barnsley first.

He added: “The environment and atmosphere in the stadium since I have come in has been really positive.

“We have to continue in that vein and if you have Blackburn Rovers in your heart then come along, if you haven’t been for a while the team needs you now because it does make a difference.

“I have felt in those games that the fans have been really positive towards the team and they have reacted.

“Whether that be when they needed a goal against Cardiff, we let them down a little bit losing a late goal against Preston, but the noise in the stadium to try and get us over the line was fantastic.

“It does help football teams that are striving and fighting for something and I’m sure the fans will have a big part to play and hopefully we can reward them with the right results.”

But Mowbray would not be drawn on points targets from the final six matches.

“It depends on everyone’s results,” he added. “If we get three wins out of six against Barnsley, Bristol City and Nottingham Forest then it gives you a better chance. If you get beaten by Bristol City and Nottingham Forest but win three others your chances are slimming up.

“There are games that we can’t really afford to lose, I would prefer to go in to the Bristol City and Forest games above them in the league and if we can win on Saturday it gives us a chance.”
