ON-LOAN Blackburn Rovers striker Tony Watt’s season is over.

Scans have revealed the groin injury he sustained in last Saturday’s 2-1 derby defeat at home to Preston North End is serious.

Watt, according to Rovers boss Paul Lambert, is set to be sidelined for a ‘few months’.

The new Scotland international has therefore returned to his parent club Charlton Athletic to begin treatment.

Lambert said: “He’s on his way back to Charlton as he’s going to be out for a few months.

“I thank him for his efforts for what he has done here. On and off the pitch he was a good guy.

“He’s a talented young footballer and, once he goes and has it checked out, I’m sure he will come back stronger next season.”

Where Watt will be playing his football in 2016-17 remains to be seen.

Rovers have agreed a fee worth more than £1m with Charlton to sign the 22-year-old on a permanent basis in the summer.

But they do not have to go through with the deal and when asked Lambert said: “He’ll go back there and it’ll be between him and Charlton (what happens next) because they are his parent club.

“Hopefully he gets his injury sorted out and he’s back for next season whatever club that is.”

Watt scored two goals in 11 appearances at Ewood Park following his arrival on loan in January.

As well as the former Celtic starlet Rovers will be without the suspended Craig Conway for Saturday’s Championship clash at Wolves while the injured Tommy Spurr (Achilles) is a major doubt.

But Shane Duffy is back from suspension and Corry Evans (groin) is expected to be named in the squad after returning to full training.
