DIRECTOR Alan Myers’ decision to leave Blackburn Rovers is of his own accord.

Rovers’ commercial and communications director, who also took on some of Derek Shaw’s duties following the departure of the club’s managing director last month, announced his decision yesterday.

In an email sent to staff at Ewood Park, obtained by the Lancashire Telegraph, Myers said: “It is with sadness and disappointment that I have decided to leave Blackburn Rovers.

“I have made this decision as I believe the time is right for me to find a different challenge.

“I will honour my contractual obligations, and with this in mind and for the purposes of transparency as a director, I feel it is appropriate to announce my decision now.

“On a personal level, the past two years have been interesting, enjoyable but above all a pleasure and privilege to be a director of this great football club.

“I am proud to have been able to serve the staff and supporters in the best way I can and I will leave having gained many more friends and great memories by doing so.

“I wish the staff, supporters, management, players and owners but most of all Blackburn Rovers Football Club, the very best for the future, I really hope it can return to where it belongs.”

It is understood that Myers has a six-month period of notice in his contract which means, depending on the stance of the club’s India-based owners Venky’s, he could remain in situ until September.

The 53-year-old was appointed as Rovers’ director of communications in February 2014 after leaving a similar role at Everton.

Myers then took on the additional role of commercial director after Dave Biggar left the club in the summer of 2015 for a position in New York.

In February of this year Shaw departed as Rovers’ managing director.

At the time the club said the 58-year-old, who is a director of Ribble Valley Shelving, ‘found the two roles too time-consuming and difficult going forward’.

It was then announced that Myers and finance director Mike Cheston would take up a dual role to cover the duties of Shaw.

Myers, formerly Sky Sports News’ North West bureau chief, said at the time: “Now is a time for unity and to focus on moving the club forward. There is a fantastic staff at the football club and together with the supporters our goal is clear.

“We have a manager who is determined to take this club to where it should be and it is our job now to support him and create the best conditions for him to achieve that.

“I appreciate the owners giving me this opportunity. There is a real sense of togetherness within the coaching staff and the players and that bodes well for the future.”

But it is believed Myers, who had informed Rovers boss Paul Lambert of his decision, has grown frustrated.

At the time of Shaw’s departure the club stated it had no intention of hiring a new managing director ‘at this stage’.

Staff at Ewood Park are unaware whether the plans have changed following yesterday’s announcement.

Myers is currently one of four active members of Rovers’ board along with Cheston, Robert Coar and Ghandi Babu.

Coar, the only figure on the board who pre-dates the takeover by Venky’s in November 2010, pays regular visits to the club, unlike Babu.

Long-term Venky’s advisor and conduit Suhail Pasha has been stationed at Ewood Park on and off since before Lambert replaced Gary Bowyer as the club’s manager in November.
