TEENAGER Khius Metz has been offered a new deal at Burnley, with seven second year scholars set to leave the club.

Pacy striker Metz, who has been capped by the Republic of Ireland Under-19s, has earned an extension to remain at Turf Moor alongside 17-year-old midfielder Aiden O'Neill, who was fast-tracked to a professional deal in January.

Metz (18), who smashed Darren Campbell’s 20-year school record in the 200 metre sprint, will now continue his progression alongside O'Neill in the club's development squad.

However, defenders Vashiko Dixon, Shaun Hobson, Lewis Norvock and Andrew Nugent, midfielders Jamal Crawford and Hamam El-Fitouri and striker Josh Dolling, have not been kept on.

Coach Michael Jolley said: “We feel that Khius has done enough during the course of his scholarship to be worthy of an additional offer for further time at the club to further his development.

“His biggest strength is obviously his incredible pace and he has already played international football for his age group, which also helps his development.

“We feel that he still has a lot of potential to improve here, and more regular game time against a more varied opposition in the Development Squad will help him."

Of the seven departures, academy manager Jason Blake said: “We understand that it is a difficult time for any players who do not received new contracts at the club.

“The academy will provide as much support as possible to the players and their families to ensure they gain the most appropriate exit route relevant to their requirements.

“Whether it is to pursue a contract at another professional club, a scholarship experience in America or a route to the University environment, the club has various strategies to assist with each pathway."

Blake added: “Each player will retain access to the scholarship programme of training and matches for the remaining duration of their contract.

“During this time, the academy staff will be working to assist each player with their chosen exit route.

“Each of the players who have been unsuccessful at securing a new contract have conducted themselves excellently throughout their scholarship period.

“They have been a credit to the themselves and their families. We wish them every success for the future in their desired destinations.”
