WADE Elliott was the toast of Turf Moor as he scooped the club's official player of the year award last night.

Burnley supporters gave their star man a rapturous reception at the glittering awards ceremony, hosted by Bet TV's Andy Hodgson.

The 27-year-old pipped Andy Gray, James O'Connor, Chris McCann and Michael Duff to take the main prize.

McCann didn't go away empty handed as he was voted young player of the year, Gray collected the award for the performance of the season - the 4-1 win at Norwich City's Carrow Road ground in October last year, while the goal of the season winner was Paul McVeigh.

The on-loan Norwich striker added commentary to the 14-pass goal when he took to the stage to collect the first award of the night.

"I didn't really have to do much at all," he admitted after seeing himself dart in front of his marker to get on the end of a brilliant right-wing delivery from Elliott to complete a move that involved nine out of the 10 outfield players in the build-up.

McVeigh faced stiff competition for the honour, not least Elliott's wonder strike at Sunderland on Friday night.

The display at Norwich was voted the best from a five-strong shortlist that also included the 3-2 home win over Preston, the 4-0 victory over Plymouth, 1-0 win at Birmingham and the 3-2 win over West Brom after recovering from a 2-0 deficit.

McCann got the nod ahead of Kyle Lafferty for the young player of the year award, which was presented by Coronation Street's Sam Aston, who plays Chesney Battersby-Brown.

McCann said: "It's a bit of a shock with Kyle with the season he's had."

Over 200 people packed into the James Hargreaves Suite for the event.
