NEW Clarets signing Graham Coughlan's teenage brother was found dead in a canal last month, it has been revealed.

Coughlan is on loan to Burnley from Sheffield Wednesday after a deal on the deadline day last week.

The deal comes weeks after the body of his brother Shane, 18, was recovered from the Grand Canal, Dublin.

Shane had gone missing on Sunday February 25 when he left a party with friend David White in the early hours to buy cigarettes.

The pair were last seen alive at 4.30am in a 24-hour shop.

Shane was found in the canal the following Wednesday, and his companion was discovered, also dead, on Saturday.

Searches of the canal were ordered on the Tuesday after a shoe similar to those worn by David when he disappeared, was found on the bank.

Floral tributes have been left near the spot where the pair were found.

Owls boss Brian Laws said: "Under the circumstances of his recent family bereavement I can fully understand Graham's desire to play first team football and wish him all the best for his spell with Burnley."

Coughlan, 32, has played for Blackburn, Plymouth, Livingston and has been at Sheffield Wednesday for two years.

He will remain with the Clarets for the rest of the season.

He had been out of action for the South Yorkshire side for some weeks before the transfer, initially due to a mouth injury, but took more time out after the tragedy.
