GARY Bowyer insists his Blackburn Rovers side can slay the mighty Liverpool in tomorrow’s ‘David versus Goliath’ FA Cup quarter-final showdown.

Seven-time winners Liverpool have won nine of their last 11 Premier League matches and are firm favourites to make it through to the Wembley semi-finals.

Bowyer admits nobody outside of Rovers’ dressing room believes they can become the first side to win at Anfield in 14 matches.

But, after the six-time winners deposed of Liverpool’s Premier League rivals Swansea City and Stoke City in the previous rounds, he is refusing to rule out the possibly of them claiming a third top-flight scalp.

He said: “We haven’t got anything to lose as outside of our dressing room nobody has given us a chance.

“It’s a real David versus Goliath match. You look at the money Liverpool have spent in comparison to us and you look at the quality of the players that they’ve got.

“It’s a massive game for an upset and that’s what we’ve got to try and look to do.”

And, asked whether Rovers can do that, Bowyer said: “It’s a game of football, it’s two teams and, when you look at the cup upsets this year, we’re looking to add to that.”

Bowyer knows, however, just how difficult a task it will be.

He believes Liverpool, who have won 13 and drawn five of their last 19 domestic matches, are one of the best teams in Europe on current form.

And Bowyer, who hailed the Reds’ performance in their league win over defending champions Manchester City last weekend as ‘phenomenal’, said: “It’s fantastic for the development of our players to go to such a wonderful place as Liverpool and play in that atmosphere and play against some of the world’s best players.

“It’s going to be a good day but we’re not going there just to go for a good day out.

“We know we’re going to have to work very hard, be very disciplined and very organised, and try and show people we’ve got some very footballers in the squad and that we can carry a threat.”

Rudy Gestede, Rovers’ 15-goal top-scorer, seems certain to start tomorrow after being left on the bench for the midweek Championship win at Sheffield Wednesday.

Jordan Rhodes did play the full match against the Owls and took his tally for the term up to 13.

But he has played just 13 minutes in the FA Cup this season and he is desperate to get on the pitch tomorrow.

Rhodes said: “I’ve not featured in too many minutes in the FA Cup and I just want to play as many games as I can and Sunday will be no different.

“It’s an occasion I’d love to be a part of and that’s why the manager gets paid to do what he does and select a team to try to beat Liverpool.”

Rovers be without the cup-tied Jay Spearing tomorrow along with the injured Josh King, Shane Duffy, Jason Lowe and David Dunn.

Bowyer confirmed Dunn, who played the last time Rovers faced Liverpool in the FA Cup 15 years ago, has suffered a fresh calf problem.

“Everybody is disappointed for him, massively so, because he’d just got himself back,” said Bowyer, who will give captain Grant Hanley and Alex Baptiste every chance to prove their fitness.
