NIAMH Robinson took part in the Isle of Man Swimming Championships and returned with seven gold medals and seven new records.

And it was a family affair for the Robinsons as younger brother Harry made it a weekend to remember for the swimming siblings after picking up a personal haul of three silvers and a gold.

It has been an incredible 12 months for Niamh, now 15, who competed for the Isle of Man at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow last year when she was just 14-years-old.

She qualified to represent the Isle of Man as her mum, Sue, who also competed in the Commonwealth Games in Auckland in 1990, was born there.

Niamh’s latest medal haul could see her represent the island at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa in September after gaining qualifying times in five events.

She set the tone by shaving 12 seconds off her personal best time to win the 200m butterfly in 2mins 19.34secs - which was also a Commonwealth Youth Games Consideration Time (CYGCT).

Her next plunge in to the pool saw her set a new age group Championship record in the 100m backstroke in 1mins 03.92secs, again setting a new pb and CYGCT and a Regional Qualifying Time.

In the 100m freestyle, Niamh dipped below 60 seconds for the first time, setting a new Championship record with a stunning 58.75secs.

The Darwen teenager showed her class in the 200m individual medley when she finished nearly a length ahead of her nearest rival, lowering her previous best time and setting a new junior island record and age group championships record with a time of 2mins 16.68secs.

And she was just as dominant over the shorter distance as she won the 50m freestyle in 27.81sec - her first sub 28sec outside of the relay events.

Niamh, who attends Canon Slade High School in Bolton, finished with a flourish, setting another junior island record and age group championship record after winning the 200m breaststroke in a personal best time of 2mins 36.22secs.

Her final race saw her win the 50m butterfly with another pb and age group record in 28.81secs.

Harry showed he could be about to follow in the slipstream of his big sister after entering six events and achieving personal best times in all of them.

The 10-year-old won gold in the 50m backstroke in 1min 16secs and added three silver medals in the 50m breaststroke (43.53), 100m breaststroke (1min 42.03secs) and the 100m individual medley (1min 23.63secs).

In the 200m backstroke, Harry qualified for the ‘open age-group’ final and finished in sixth place overall in a time of 2mins 52.51secs.

And he was also 16th fastest overall in the 200m freestyle open age group in 2mins 43.76secs.

Coach Mike Wilson said: “Both Harry and Niamh thoroughly enjoyed competing on the Island at these Championships, and as the season progresses, the times they have both achieved will give them opportunities in 2015 to compete at the Lancashire County Swimming Championships and the North West Regional Age Group Swimming Championships.

“The Commonwealth Youth Games Consideration Times that Niamh achieved will be presented to the Isle of Man Commonwealth Games Committee in April where she will be considered to compete for the Island in Samoa in September at the Commonwealth Youth Games.”
