BURNLEY midfielder Scott Arfield admits it would be ‘the pinnacle’ to represent Scotland one day – as he waits to find out whether he has been selected to face England this month.

Scotland face the Republic of Ireland on November 14 before hosting England in a friendly four days later, with Gordon Strachan expected to announce his squad today.

Arfield has been backed by his Clarets team-mates in recent months for a first senior international call-up, after impressive form both in the Premier League and on the way to promotion last season.

The 26-year-old was left out of the squad that faced Georgia and Poland last month but has made no secret of his desire to represent his country and would love to be involved against England.

“It would be brilliant to be part of that,” Arfield said.

“I’ve never hidden away from the fact that it’s an ambition to play for your country. It always has been and it always will be.

“If I can do that in any way I’d be delighted. To play for your country is the pinnacle really.”

Even watching on from afar, Arfield is an avid supporter of the Scotland national team and would love to be part of what he believes is a revitalised squad under Strachan.

The Tartan Army started qualifying for Euro 2016 with a narrow defeat in Germany but then beat Georgia and drew in Poland.

But he admits that he has received no contact in recent months from the international set-up, learning of his continued omission when he sees the squad announced in the news.

“The first I see is when the squads go up and then I watch the games,” said the Clarets ace.

“They’ve had a great campaign so far and if I could get in there and the gaffer sees fit I’d be delighted.

“The manager up there has changed the whole mindset of the whole country, everyone is behind it.

“They went to Germany and the second goal was a bit soft but they were brilliant for 70 minutes, then against Poland they were brilliant – it was a good result – and Georgia at home too.

“It’s that time that you really want to be involved in that and I’ve never hidden away from the fact that I’d be buzzing to be there.”

If Arfield does not make the squad this time, he has vowed to continue proving his worth with Burnley.

“First of all you need to keep playing and stay in that team,” he said about his club form.

“It’s all about a Saturday to hit your heights and your standards personally that you believe in.

“Anything after that is a bonus. First of all it’s about staying in that starting line-up.”

Stephen Ward has already been named in the Republic of Ireland’s provisional squad for the qualifier against Scotland at Glasgow’s Celtic Park.
