Accrington Panthers 18 Latchford Albion 46

ACCRINGTON Panthers began the new rugby league season with a heavy defeat at Livingstone Road.

But it was Accrington who forged ahead against their Cheshire opponents in the opening fixture of the North West League League Two programme.

Powerhouse Leon Fifield went over the line after a fine pass from Ashley O'Rourke had split the opposition defence. Fifield also converted the try.

Latchford, though, reduced the arrears shortly afterwards with a try, although the penalty was missed.

Albion extended their lead in the twentieth minute however, with O'Rourke scoring their second touch down and Fifield converting again.

Latchford hit back immediately with three unanswered tries, leaving the Panthers trailing 22-12 at half-time and in trouble. Albion were fully in charge now, adding two more tries and when they added their third touchdown of the half, the points were in the bag.

Simon Wrigley went over the line for Accy, but when the pass was deemed a forward, it summed up a disappointing opening day for Panthers.

Albion went over again to post a 42-12 lead, before Fifield grabbed a consolation try, crashing over beneath the sticks to make an easy conversion for himself. Latchford had the final say, however, with a try in the last minute.

Accrington Panthers return to home action against Widnes West Bank on March 29 (2.30pm).
