EAST Lancashire ace Samantha Murray leads a young modern pentathlon squad for the first World Cup of the season in Mexico this week.

Clitheroe’s Murray, who won silver at the London Olympics, is, at 24, the most experienced athlete in the eight-strong team.

Murray is currently ranked 16th in the world and will be looking to get her season off to a strong start.

Pentathlon GB Performance Director, Jan Bartu, said: “This is the second year of the Olympic cycle leading up to Rio, so the bar is rising gradually for athletes.

“They all have a lot more experience than a year ago and we expect them to show a good international standard at the first World Cup of the season.”

Murray begins her campaign tomorrow in the qualification competition before, providing she qualifies, the final on Friday.

She could also feature in the mixed relay competition on the Sunday.
