SKELETON ace Kristan Bromley will join his girlfriend Shelley Rudman in the Great Britain squad for the Winter Olympics after his place was confirmed yesterday.

Waterfoot’s Bromley, who is missing just an Olympic medal from a glittering career that includes gold medals in the World Championships, European Championships and World Cup, will be taking part in his fourth, and last, Games.

And the 41-year-old is determined to enjoy the occasion, hoping that lower expectations can see him sneak onto the podium.

He said: “I am incredibly proud to be selected for my fourth Olympic Winter Games. Representing your country at the Olympics is the pinnacle of any sport and the stuff that dreams are made of. “Every Olympic campaign has been four years of hard work to get there and has pushed me to raise my game going into each season.

“This year has been no different. I have been working with a focus on Sochi, and signs are showing that my performance is on track. I’m excited about competing in Sochi and will give it my all.

“It makes it even more special that it is exactly 20 years to the month since the first time I tried skeleton – to have remained at the top of the sport for that time, gives me a wealth of experience to take to Sochi.”

Fellow skeleton star Rudman, who won Olympic silver in 2006, is considered to have a genuine medal chance in the women’s event having been crowned world champion last year.

The 32-year-old said: “I am delighted to be selected for Team GB for my third Olympics and take great pride in that achievement alone.

“When I started out in skeleton I would never have thought that was possible.

“I hope I will be able to merge all my experiences from the last two Olympiads to give myself the best possible chance of success.”
