Dave Burnley column: The Owls jinx goes on

Lancashire Telegraph: Sean Dyche Sean Dyche

THERE are some clubs who have the Indian sign over us no matter what their league standing.

Sheffield Wednesday are one such football team.

With just a single victory in our last eight meetings at Turf Moor, it’s fair to say that the Owls can be categorised as somewhat of a ‘bogey’ club when we are the hosts. So maybe the 1-1 draw wasn’t so unexpected.

You only have to go back to last season when even after Charlie Austin’s hat-trick we had to settle for a 3-3 draw.

And I still have nightmares about our 7-2 capitulation in the 2002/03 campaign when the already relegated ‘Yorkies’ handed out a lesson in finishing.

On Saturday their performance once again belied their lowly position, although in the last five minutes the visitors’ goalmouth led a charmed life as Burnley pushed for a winner.

As at Middlesbrough on Boxing Day when custodian Shay Given produced a couple of outstanding saves, his counterpart Chris Kirkland made two international class stops to prevent sharpshooter Danny Ings adding to his impressive tally.

That is the calibre of keeper we are up against in this division and just goes to show the quality of personnel that are employed in the Championship.

Credit where it’s due then, to a clever Marney-Vokes combination for our solitary goal.

As the Clarets have no further interest in the FA Cup, and our scheduled opponents Bolton Wanderers do, it means there is no match this forthcoming weekend.

That is no bad thing as it provides a few more recovery days to rest tired legs, let bodies recuperate and allow aching limbs to heal – and that’s just us the supporters!

Then, starting a week tonight with the visit of Brighton, Burnley will have to cram in no less than five league games in 19 days providing Liverpool knock Bournemouth out of the FA Cup in the fourth round – as would be expected.

With three of those fixtures away from home it is going to be another stiff test of our resolve, which all means an already tough season is about to get a whole lot tougher.

Our support can be pivotal at this busy period, let’s see the lads through it.

Let me help you rephrase that. Your dyslexia got in the way. What the poor lad was trying to say but got a bit tied up was that Burnley we in a false position, they should be top. He also needed to add to"better team" the words "than useless Rovers". There.all sorted out.
