Experience crucial to Stanley

DANNY Webber hopes he and fellow striker Kayode Odejayi can help to guide a young Accrington Stanley team away from relegation trouble – as he passes on the tips he once learned from Manchester United’s Fab Four.

Webber came through the youth system at Manchester United, where he had four of the world’s best strikers to look up to, and now wants to lead by example in the Stanley dressing room along with Odejayi and the club’s other senior pros.

A Reds side with a number of young players sit level on points with the League Two drop zone.

“I remember being their age and you look to people who have played 10 or 15 years in the game and know how to see games out and you draw upon their experience,” said the 32-year-old.

“You just had to look at Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke, Teddy Sheringham, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. You only had to sit and watch them in training, and we went to every game and watched how they react to adversity if you go 1-0 down.

“How many times did United win games late on, and know how to see games out as well?

“Sometimes the example you set may not be an obvious example. It’s an example of maybe closing a ball down where you could leave it, but you going could spark off what everybody else does.

“It’s important for us to be good with our education, helping the young boys, making sure we’re doing the right things as well and making sure we’re not taking things for granted.”

Target man Odejayi returned to Stanley for a second loan spell at the start of the month and partnered Webber up front for only the second time in Saturday’s draw with Newport.

“I get the way Kay plays, I enjoy playing with him,” Webber said.

“When you get game time with intelligent players you can only go strength to strength, so hopefully I can get some more game time with him.

“Between the two of us you’ve got every facet to break people down.

“I can go in behind, I can come short, Kay can do the same but he also has that physical presence that I don’t possess.”
