BLACKBURN Rovers boss Gary Bowyer hailed his side’s superb 1-0 victory over Watford as a true team effort.

Bowyer was quick to credit Jordan Rhodes for his 65th-minute winner and centre-backs Scott Dann and Grant Hanley for keeping the Championship’s top-scorers in check.

But he believes the success, which moved improving Rovers up to eighth in the table, was a collective triumph.

Bowyer said: “Scott and Grant have been magnificent again and they give you a platform to build on.

“There’s a danger of getting a bit boring in press conferences because we’re constantly talking about Jordan Rhodes, Grant and Scott.

“But the other lads are doing an enormous amount of work for them as well. It’s a big team effort.”

Corry Evans and Jason Lowe worked tirelessly to prevent Watford’s three-man midfield from getting a grip on the game while Tommy Spurr and Todd Kane produced excellent performances alongside captain Dann and Hanley in the Rovers back four.

The free-scoring Hornets were restricted to just two shots on target all night.

Bowyer said: “It was an outstanding effort. We backed up the performance on Saturday with an excellent win against a top, top team.

“You saw in the first half that they got into their groove and played their passing game but we defended very well. We were organised and disciplined and then grew into the game.

“In the second half we took confidence from keeping a clean sheet in the first half and the lads at half-time said themselves that they felt they could play better.

“I think in the second half they went out and showed that.”

No-one took the fight more to Watford after the restart than Josh King.

But it was top-scorer Rhodes who settled the contest when he thumped home a close-range header.

It was the striker’s ninth goal of the season – all of which have come in his last seven matches – and his 36th in 57 games for Rovers since his £8m move from Huddersfield Town.

“I don’t get bored about talking about Jordan Rhodes,” said Bowyer.

“He’s a fantastic lad, he works tremendously hard, he’s a great finisher who knows where the goal is and he rightly deserves the plaudits because of his finishing ability.

“But he knows how hard everybody works to give him those chances.”

Rovers have lost just one of their previous seven league games – winning four – and are just four points behind the play-off places going into Sunday’s trip to Wigan Athletic.

The Latics are in Europa League action tonight and so did not have a midweek league game.

And Bowyer has vowed not to let his players rest on their laurels after back-to-back wins for the second time this season.

The Rovers manager added: “What’s important now is to regroup, not let them get carried away and get focused on Wigan.

“It’s 10 games in and we are working very hard for each other and developing a spirit.”
