BURNLEY moved to the top of the Championship table with a 2-0 win at Doncaster Rovers.

Sam Vokes’ penalty and a late second goal, credited as an own goal by Rob Jones, gave the Clarets a fifth successive win for the first time since 2002.

It put them above previous leaders QPR and top of the table on goal difference.

Harry Redknapp’s side are not in action this midweek, because scheduled opponents Wigan are otherwise engaged in the Europa League.

The Clarets, who host Reading on Saturday, were not regarded as one of the favourites for promotion at the start of the season but have now won seven, drawn two and lost only one of their opening 10 league fixtures.

It means they have now made their best start to a league campaign for 52 years, since the 1961/62 season.

Vokes put Burnley ahead from the penalty spot on the stroke of half time at the Keepmoat Stadium after he had been felled by Rob Jones.

Jones was then credited with an own goal two minutes from time as Kieran Trippier’s cross was deflected in.

The first half produced few chances, with Tom Heaton saving an early effort from Federico Macheda.

Michael Kightly miskicked a volley from a good position for Burnley, before Heaton saved again from James Coppinger.

But the Clarets went ahead through Vokes’ penalty and pushed for a second after the interval, with Ings having two headers saved.

Macheda fired over when he might have scored but the Clarets doubled their advantage late on to ensure they moved top of the league.

“We’ve earned the right to be where we are,” said Clarets boss Sean Dyche.

“I don’t think we’ve lucked out in any game.

“We’ll enjoy it but there’s still a lot of work to do.”
