NUNO Gomes has no plans to push for a Blackburn Rovers exit this summer, according to his brother.
Gomes has been frustrated by a lack of match action in recent times, starting only one game in the final seven months of the season, but still has a year left on his contract at Ewood Park.
The former Portugal star will wait to see what happens over Rovers’ next managerial appointment, with Gary Bowyer still expected by senior figures at the club to get the job in the next few days.
But Gomes’ brother Tiago Ribeiro, who also represents the 36-year-old, has confirmed to the Lancashire Telegraph that the striker is not currently intending to ask to leave.
“He has another year on his contract and nothing says to me that he will not continue,” Ribeiro said.
“We are waiting for news on the coach but he has a final year on his contract.
“We will have to see what happens with the coach.”
Gomes, whose real name is Nuno Ribeiro, joined Rovers on a two-year deal last summer after leaving Portuguese side Braga.
Bringing in such a star name, who has 79 caps for his country and has also played for Benfica and Fiorentina, potentially seemed a coup for a Rovers side who had just been relegated from the top flight.
Gomes’ finishing skills were on show with four goals in his first six appearances for Rovers but he would later lose his place, with a couple of injuries also restricting his involvement during the course of the season.
Fourteen further appearances brought no goals and his start against Crystal Palace, when he was substituted at half time, was his first since October 3.
Gomes was an unused substitute on the final day of the season at Birmingham and his disappointment at not playing more has been illustrated on Twitter, when he has occasionally re-tweeted fans’ comments sympathising with him for not being a regular in the team.
Rovers are keen to cut their wage bill for next season but know that the task will not be an easy one, with a number of big earners tied to contracts.
Danny Murphy has also said he could be happy to stay depending on the next managerial appointment, although he did acknowledge that he might have to reconsider his options if he is not getting regular first-team football.
Gomes will return to his homeland with Rovers in July after the club announced a pre-season training camp in Portugal, which could yet also include a friendly against Portuguese opposition.
