Appleton wants Premier League team at home
10:30pm Saturday 26th January 2013 in Sport
By Andy Cryer, Blackburn Rovers reporter
A JUBILANT Blackburn Rovers manager Michael Appleton wants a home tie against a Premier League side in the fifth round of the FA Cup.
The Rovers boss celebrated his first win since taking charge at Ewood Park, a 3-0 win at Derby County, and is keeping his fingers crossed for a good reward in tomorrow's draw.
Appleton also had words of praise for Rovers' travelling support this afternoon, claiming the Pride Park clash was made to feel like a home game.
He said: "I would love to see a full house at Ewood Park. 25000 plus fans against one of the big Premier League boys just to remind people what a fantastic club we have got and what fantastic supporters we have got.
"Because those types of days are the ones we want to recreate at the football club again. It would be nice.
"A home tie is always a bonus. It is nice to get in the hat and lets see what happens.
"The league is the main priority but it is a good habit to win games. From my point of view I am not even thinking about the league at the minute.
"It is important we enjoy what we did today, look forward to the draw and then come Monday morning I will get the lads together and make sure we prepare for Bristol.
"At times it felt like a home game and we all really appreciate the support. The fans have been fantastic."

Glad you enjoyed the fan support Michael, we enjoyed watching Rovers playing like they wanted to win. don't know what you said to them in the dressing room at HT, but it sure made a difference.
Feeling the confidence sweeping through the squad and lifting the fans, lots of smiling faces and credit to Derby fans, very humble in defeat. Enjoying this new found passion, some really tight play and the whole team looking transformed and hungry already.
Seeing that this STILL isnt Appys team, its a credit to him. I think I have to say Shaw was right to lure him to Ewood, he may be inexperienced in some eyes but he seems pretty clued up from what Ive seen and heard so far. MA said in his post match interview that he felt the last game in his eyes was his first win and he's right because he got the squad playing like they should be and todays win was a result of that as the confidence is building in the team.
Well done MA. You may just tutn out to be our saviour yet.

I used to go to every away game until we first got in the PL but a combination of cost and work stopped that, would be good to start again and get a couple of away games a season in at leats
But with our luck we will get Everton again, and they are not messing around this season.

The return of Pedersen has been useful as well. Set-pieces are far more dangerous and I believe this is one of the reasons we've created more chances in the last two games. Forget the Charlton game, that game was a nightmare on and off the pitch.
Bristol and Ipswich at home are great opportunities to add three points to the tally. I don't think it'd be unrealistic to hope for two wins, however they'll be tough, O'Driscoll has tightened Bristol up.
In all honesty, I really don't mind who we play. If we get Middlesbrough away then it'll test us against play-off contenders, if we get lower-league opposition then we have a good chance of progression but a premier league team at home would hopefully get the fans closer together.
Hopefully you get your signings over the next four days MA. The next two games will decide where we are come May.

FA Cup - 2 coaches and a runaway train that arrived just in time to end us being chased all over the away end. Kicked over the crash barriers losing my brew in the process - ouch !
But then came the B&W army to even all things up - yipee :)
Broken leg for(remind me) and a 2-1 defeat ?
How many 13 year old's would experience that in these days ?

I was on the train. It broke down getting us to the ground with about 15 mins to go to full time. Luton were I think in Div one, (now the Prem). I think we were in Div 2 or maybe 3?
We were all **** off because we had to pay full price to get in for the last 15 minutes or so. I am sure it was still 0-0 at that point, then Luton scored 2 late goals!
We were then bricked and bottled all the way back to the station. (anyone remember that narrow back alley we were ambushed in? Luton fans both sides of the fence?
Train broke down about 3 times on the way home. It cost a **** load of money for about 10 minutes of football in which Luton scored twice, but the memories of that one game are still better than these awful last two years with these mammeries in charge.
Good luck to Michael and his staff. Better times are ahead with this manager I feel. 100% support!

The record attendance at Ewood is 61,783 v Bolton Wanderers, 2 March 1929 – FA Cup 6th Round (Your grandad must be older than he says!)
Statto Time:
What is Rovers 'second' highest ever attendance at Ewood?
The top 6 highest attendances were all in the FA Cup - but what is the highest in the League?
What was Ewood Park called originally?
Ewood is the second oldest ground in the Prem/English League and opened in 1882. But which is the oldest ground (and this may surprise a few folks)?
It may pass some time waiting for the cup draw....

My original call for a statto was just curiosity, what percentage of the towns then population probably went to that game ? and how big a ground would we need if we had that level of support today ! Are you up to the challenge ?

Rovers have never had massive attendances even in the 'old' days.....big attendance did happen but very occasionally......th
e best season and only season Rovers averaged more than 30k was 1959 -30,544
Roughly about 1/3rd of the towns population in the late 50's
