New Hammers bid for Swede Olsson set to be turned down as Rovers eye Wiseman

First published in Sport Lancashire Telegraph: Photograph of the Author by , Blackburn Rovers reporter

BARNSLEY defender Scott Wiseman has emerged on Blackburn Rovers’ radar as new boss Michael Appleton starts to plot the club’s route back into Championship play-off contention.

While West Ham United are understood to have now bid in the region of £4million for Martin Olsson – just 24 hours after manager Sam Allardyce said they were unlikely to raise their bid from an initial £2m.

But Rovers remain keen to hold on to the Swede and Appleton is also eager to add to his squad before the end of January.

Appleton was close to signing 27-year-old Wiseman when he was Blackpool boss earlier this month, with the Yorkshire outfit now braced for him to revive his interest in the versatile defender.

No official contact has yet been made as Rovers mull over other possible transfer business but the Tykes would be willing to let their former skipper leave for a fee in the region of £150,000.

A number of other potential targets are also understood to be being considered at Ewood Park, including West Brom centre back Craig Dawson.

Rovers are believed to be one of a host of Championship clubs tracking the England under 21 international with regards a possible loan move, although they may all have to wait until later in the window.

Leeds United and Bolton Wanderers are also understood to be tracking the 22-year-old.

The Ewood Park club had expressed an interest in former midfielder David Bentley before Appleton’s appointment, with the Spurs man believed to be interested in a return, but sources close to the player are unsure if any move will now materialise.

Rovers’ transfer business this window is likely to depend on potential January departures, with French defender Gael Givet still hopeful of an exit.

The loss of Givet would strengthen Appleton’s need for defensive reinforcements, with Dawson then becoming a more immediate target.

Barnsley’s Wiseman can play at either right back or centre back and was all set to move to Bloomfield Road at the start of the January transfer window, when Appleton was manager there.

Blackpool had a bid accepted but the move broke down due to personal terms, as Appleton grew increasingly frustrated at the lack of transfer activity at Rovers’ Lancashire rivals.

Wiseman would be keen on a move having fallen out of favour in recent weeks, including receiving heavy criticism from the Oakwell supporters.

Bristol City are also believed to be interested in him, while if Chelsea loanee Todd Kane continues to impress at Rovers, Appleton may opt to extend his spell at Ewood Park instead.

Meanwhile Rovers remain hopeful summer Leon Best will return to action next month, having missed the season so far after suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury.

Best moved to Ewood from Newcastle United for in the region of £3million but injured himself in a pre-season friendly against AEK Athens.

I will be surprised if any money is spent unless of course we get
four million for Olsson, keeping players on loan will probably be the more
realistic option for Venkys.

The fans at Barnsley are giving this lad stick and in my opinion the fans are usually correct why would Appleton go for someone who isnt even up to the job at Barnsley?
Bentley would be an ideal signing as he could give the supply we badly require from the right hand side for Rhodes and Best when he returns. The young lad from Chelsea is full of running but he needs to learn when to pass the ball and isnt the answer to our defensive frailties. We require a good CB who can command the area and win those balls that Danns doesnt seem tall enough to reach.

Craig Dawson has not made the progress I expected him to at WBA. Despite his youth, he was a star performer at Rochdale under Keith Hill and was the "League 2 Player of the Year." He would make a good acquisition in the circumstances, but I am not so convinced about Scott Wiseman, who was a team mate of Dawson at the Dale.

Erm Tottenham fans rank Bentley lower than crap.... so you logic isn't always right. Everton and Yakubu ring a bell? Just because a player is seen poorly by his clubs fans, an may play poorly in the clubs team doesn't make him a poor player.

Would rather we spent millions on the likes if the Scottish Rooney and Scott Dann? Give the guy a chance - he knows this league and at least he seems to be identifying the positions that need strengthening rather than signing another Portuguese midfielder for the benefit of agents fees!

Seriously though Wiseman is exactly the kind of grafter we need to get us outa here. He wasn't their captain for nothing and another leader on the pitch is exactly what we need. Not bothered if he's £1.50 so long as he does a job, unlike Etuhu who has been pants considering his athleticism, him and murphy have been passengers.

Cmon we have had some great players in the past who have signed for peanuts... at least give them a chance;
appleton knows he has to win over the fans and hit the ground running if he is not going to be slated...
so he is not going to bring in players he does not think will do a job for him.

First time I've ever commented on a Rovers article so don't just shoot me down as a typical "Dingle-on-a-windup" but...

That's true harwoodstblue, if Rovers had more supporters like lusorover then Venky's wouldn't need to hire a PR firm and could probably spend that money on players, unfortunately not many Rovers fans seem to have the realistic understanding of the running costs of a football club that lusorover is demonstrating.

Venky's are spending millions more on Rovers than any other club in the division is spending, losing about £2 million per month. If you say you've made a profit of £30 million on players sales (no idea of the actual figure) then at £2 million a month that's only going to last 15 months, just over a year - without spending any of it on transfer fees.

Having had years and years of supporting Rovers where finances weren't an issue has sheltered your fans from the reality. You used to laugh at Burnley and ask where all the money had gone but we actually are very aware of the reality of the situation with club finances at this level without rich backers. It's not just the headline figure of the transfer fee which is almost never all up front, it's wages, signing on fees, agents fees, loyalty bonuses. You've got ground maintenance, non-footballing staff, policing costs etc. It's not as simple as you think, not even close, something which lusorover has grasped and you haven't, if your fans don't get realistic then the negativity is going to drag your side down just as much as the Venky's have with their mismanagement (which, annoyingly from a Burnley fans perspective, they seem to be starting to turn a corner on) - and no one who has the money will have any interest in picking up the pieces if you drive them out.

The Wisemann deal was the start of the end for Appleton at Blackpool, Oysten wouldn’t pay the fee or wages that Barnsley and the player wanted. So its pretty obvious that Appleton has seen something in this player he likes and wants in his team.

People seem to be moaning because were looking to sell Olsson for in the region of £4m and buying Wisemann for £150,000 as negative. If we were paying £4 for Wisemann would people still be moaning? The moaning seems to be about the amount that’s being spent, if Wisemann turns out to be a great signing for that price then this is amazingly fantastic business in anybody's eyes.

What is spent on a player doesn’t always mean how good they are just compare

Thank god! At least Appleton's a man who knows what he wants. Blackpool frustrated him because he was basically told that he had to sell a couple of his key players, but get no funds to replace them, as well as getting into the play-offs.

I just would like to see us attempt to sign a player who is going to really show we have ambition. Rochina is a playmaker, but we don't have a player who regularly gives Rhodes chances. Nunes did it for 1 game then got a hamstring problem.

At least an attempt is being made to rectify our defence. I do think Dann is improving though, he had a diabolic first season and a half however his displays recently have been dominant. I haven't seen Wiseman enough to pass comment.

Great news about the sponsor by the way!

Cast your mind back 2 years BV......Before Venkys.

No such problems....Yes, we had some debt like every other club, but it was well managed, probably losing £2 million per YEAR, not £2 million per month, and self inflicted.

Well I would like to know which players that have left Ewood and gone on to star for their new teams after being lamblasted by our fans for being rubbish.
The fact is I can remember back 50 years and still cannot recall anyone except maybe a centre half that did well in Germany but he wasn't getting too much stick when he was here.
I still think the clubs fans are the best barometer on how good the player is.Frank Lampard for example will obviously be a good signing for the club he joins as the Chelsea fans are aware he puts in a full shift.

LusoRover for once you are right - any money made from player transfers will have to be put towards our huge losses (approx £2m per month).

However, if you are stating this today, how come you (and others on here) sometimes post that Venkys are putting £2m cash per month into the club to prop it up.

If you really believed that (and there is NO evidance to suggest they are) then any profits from player sales would be exactly be that as we would be running at neither a profit or a loss.

I can't beieve Paul Agnew gets £100,000s of pounds per year and the club pays you sod all - you are far better at club/Venky propaganda than he is.

Still, its nice to see you posting something thats correct for once rather than something you dreamed up on planet "Luny-Kean" where you seem to spend most of your life.

2 years ago you were in the Premiership, punching above your weight and whinging that your board wasn't spending enough money and that the football was boring. You wanted new investment, you got it, it didn't work out, that's the risk you take. You would have sold Samba and Jones whether you were owned by the Walkers Trust or Venky's, the same running costs would be involved and you wouldn't have been able to spend anywhere near what you made on transfers either way. You were on a slow decline then, there is no way a club of Rovers' size can stay in the Premiership without major financial backing, especially if you charge as little as your club does for tickets. Venky's hastened it with their lack of football nous but it was very likely to happen in a few years anyway, they are now propping up the club with a combination of their own money and that made from player sales.

You can't criticise the losses the club are making and demand that they invest any and all transfer profit back into the player budget, they've got to balance the books somehow - if they don't then you'll be in an even bigger mess - if they were to walk out now who would take their place that could sustain your wage budget? Anyone who came in would oversee an even larger turnover of playing staff as they tried to balance the books. You might not like Venkys but at least they seem happy to underwrite your massive losses to try and get you back into the Premiership, it could be much worse.

Not a voice of reason surely. Look at Venkys Group profits of around £10 million last year and £13 million the year before - yes it's all available via the internet, have a look - and you might grasp that they don't have millions to give away.

Get real and open your eyes.

Whats happening, you can't have a dingle talking sense on here. Unfortunately you have failed to understand that the lynch mob don't listen. They haven't listened since they took up with athe heavy metal sniffing welders.. It all started innocent like in order to get Kean out, but now they've bogged themselves up and want Venky's out as well. They think if they keep saying Venkys out, they will give them the club for nothing but a welding stick. The question is simple, who would you rather run your football club, a successful family with a worldwide business, or a welder from Darwen? Its okay saying but Jack Walker was a local lad, yes he was and he was willing to back the club with millions. The welder from Darwen has collected about 100,000 from donations and thinks he can run the club on it. Maybe they will get there wish but with that kind of financial backing we'd have to exist in the unibond league.

Yep, just like Southampton, reading, Swansea because they spent loads in the championship to get promoted!

What make me laugh are those that moan about venkys spending too much on wages etc and then moan when we look at inexpensive players.

We're passing judgement here on speculation and we're not giving the manager a chance - he has a much better idea of players in this league than berg or kean.

You make a number of sensible, well reasoned points, Claret. However, under the old regime, i.e. John Williams, he spoke to the fans and told it like it was. Fans trusted him and believed him. It was pellucidly clear that Rovers were punching above their weight and gravity would eventually win The Indians have decided to go a different way, as their money entitles them to do, so be it. I believe the club is on the fast route to bankruptcy. With Williams et al still there we could have expected to be a solid Championship side, which is probably our rightful place. I believe, however, that some fans still hold unrealistic expectations of the clubs potential. They are entitled to their view..

Pocketed the profits? Don't make me laugh.

If there is a profit on player sales it has to be used to pay the bills.

Get real!
Not a voice of reason surely. Look at Venkys Group profits of around £10 million last year and £13 million the year before - yes it's all available via the internet, have a look - and you might grasp that they don't have millions to give away.

Hey up, Berger Kings up early this morning, is it time to collect your prescription from the methadone clinic or has sis booted you out early?
aye but he has a point..

Cmon we have had some great players in the past who have signed for peanuts... at least give them a chance;
appleton knows he has to win over the fans and hit the ground running if he is not going to be slated...
so he is not going to bring in players he does not think will do a job for him.
My only worry is if the fiddlers behind the scenes have anthing to do with it .... then they will be useless.
I'm 100% sure that these transfer targets, bar Bentley, are Appleton targets that he wanted at Blackpool but Oyston refused to put money in (like with Holloway).
With the players we're targeting, it's obvious what Appleton thinks of our back four and midfield.... not a lot...
he;s not wrong though is he?

obviously doesnt subscribe to teh Keano "a player should be able to play in any position" notions.

Great news about the sponsor by the way!
well done someone with something sensible to say . I think Jay Tabb would do a good job for us and wouldn't cost the world . Wiseman is an old fashioned defender who knows when to launch into row z if necessary. If Olsson stays then we should get a left back so we can push him further up the pitch were he is most effective

Good suggestion, he's up for sale, has a good cross on him and more importantly has been promoted before. I personally am a fan of Adomah at Bristol City, apparently he's around the £1m mark at the moment. That price doesn't make it seem like an ambitious move, but it's known throughout that he is a quality player who really should be plying his trade in the Premier League. Swansea want him though.

Appleton, from looking at his targets, likes grafters so maybe Etuhu will be kicked into shape, become the player he should of been when we signed him? If he does, it'll be like a new signing. I just really hope we move forward this time, the turn of the year has been great so far, finger crossed.

What a load of bull........We've been paying the bills and running costs that EVERY club has for 138 years. We know what it takes to run a club without being told by a Burnley fan. We were well run until 2 years ago and holding our own in the Prem, making small losses each year,

The problems started when Venkys rode into town and if it wasn't for their incompetence we would still be there, no problem.

Right there is the problem with the naysayers at the moment. You can't see past "until Venky's arrived.."

No-one anywhere (well, apart from Modan and a Roverspal and they're just plain wierd) are claimin that what Venkys have done since they arrived is commendable. We all know what happened, theres no need to keep rehashing history, what is important now is what are they going to do to rectify it.

We either try to get out of the mess we're in by attending and showing support to the team or we can sit at home spitting out our dummies that we don't want to keep lining Venky's pockets or turn up only to boo and protest and risk further decline.

No doubt those same people will sleep easy knowing they can keep blaming Venky's if it happens, but it won't change the outcome.

Venky's have brought us here, it is for them to get us out of it. But we need to get behind the team and do our bit too. Sitting there stewing about the past two years certainly isnt going to get us promoted anytime soon - Neither is turning up on Saturday to give Desai a piece of your mind, it might make you feel better, it certainly wont do anything else more other than perhaps ensure its another long time before they attend a match again.

Sitting there stewing about the past two years certainly isnt going to get us promoted anytime soon - Neither is turning up on Saturday to give Desai a piece of your mind, it might make you feel better, it certainly wont do anything else more other than perhaps ensure its another long time before they attend a match again. blueblooded

Patrick Anderson - he went onto captain Barcelona - you can't get much higher in club football than that yet he was VERY ordinary when he played for us.
Players that have been rubbish at Blackburn but gone on to success with other clubs ?

Barry Ferguson, £6m+ waste of a shirt for Rovers, sold him back to Rangers, for about £4m less, and they made him their captain.

Kevin Davies, £7m of completely without any redeeming features at Ewood, living legend at the Reebok.

Not sure what this proves but it answers the question.

Do you have a life outside these pages.
Yep and its a very interesting one too.
I kinda doubt that.

Kalinic to Yakubu
Correctly put, does anyone one remember a young non-league player named Ian Wright? Can see it now "he only cost 30 bob, must be rubbish" -- I don't think!

Chris Samba was an established Premiership player who was watched by several of the top six teams..How can you compare??? Your totally silly comment seems to support the Venky Regime at this club.... They are going to sell Players and bring in poorer ones>>>Get Real and Wake Up

Agreed roverinmanchester...

....Just like they have always done, AND pocketed the profit.

Why is it that some " supporters " if that is what lusorover is, can be so blind and have the memory of a goldfish ?
Pocketed the profits? Don't make me laugh.

If there is a profit on player sales it has to be used to pay the bills.

Get real!
Not a voice of reason surely. Look at Venkys Group profits of around £10 million last year and £13 million the year before - yes it's all available via the internet, have a look - and you might grasp that they don't have millions to give away.
The prefix 'Luso' means Portuguese, (look it up if you don't believe me).

When our friend lusorover talks about paying Rovers bills, what do you think he means ?

How about bringing more of his chums from the Algarve and paying them silly money to sit on their ar5es at Brockhall.

Some of the comments on here beggar belief. For the last 18 months anyone with half a brain knew that we needed to strengthen the defence so when Appleton actually prioritised this the moaning and whinging starts. Only £150k so he must be sh*t, remember Samba £400k, Nelsen on a free and you would have them back tomorrow. Over the last two years we have bought s lot of sh*t and paid millions and millions, some who never even made it into the first team and you moaned. Just let Appleton get on and manage our club and if you cannot give him s chance maybe try Prozac

You lot **** about the amount of money being Spent on players hav to realise that big names dont come cheap and to my maths (which aint very good) all the money available went on getting us out of debt and then spunking the rest on JR!?!? WE HAVENT GOT ANY MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So when a half decent DEFENDER (I thought thats the area we need to strengthen) comes around for 150gs I hate to say it but we need to suck it up and get it done!!!

If we do sign or loan players lets give them a chance before we slate them.
