Appleton's imminent appointment causes Ewood conflict
2:10pm Friday 11th January 2013 in Sport
By Andy Cryer, Blackburn Rovers reporter
Michael Appleton
MICHAEL Appleton looks set to be appointed Blackburn Rovers’ new manager today – despite a late rally of support for caretaker boss Gary Bowyer from senior players.
The Lancashire Telegraph understands several of Rovers’ first team squad urged the club’s hierarchy to give temporary duo Bowyer and Terry McPhillips longer at the helm, but their advice has been ignored by some quarters.
Appleton’s switch – and that of assistant Ashley Westwood – would come two months after being appointed Blackpool boss from Portsmouth, with members of Rovers’ squad adamant Bowyer deserved the chance to continue .
The caretaker boss has guided the team to three consecutive wins – following a dismal run under Henning Berg – but is now likely to be in the dug out for the last time for the trip to Wolves this evening.
After a day of compensation talks, Blackpool gave Rovers permission to speak to Appleton yesterday evening – following Wednesday’s late night approach – with Ewood directors expecting to be able to unveil his appointment today after talks.
Mixed messages were coming from the club though with sources close to global advisor Shebby Singh telling the Lancashire Telegraph he believed Bowyer would continue in the hot seat for the next couple of weeks at least – at the request of owners Venky’s.
Singh has been involved in a power struggle with managing director Derek Shaw and operations director Paul Agnew for most of the season, with the latter duo responsible for interest in Appleton.
Appleton yesterday said his farewells to staff at Bloomfield Road - after compensation was agreed - and it would be a remarkable turnaround should he not be appointed Rovers boss now.
His arrival would also call into question the controversial Singh’s future at the club, with Shaw and Agnew having already flown to India to voice their concerns about his role to the owners.
All three declined to comment on the managerial situation when contacted by the Lancashire Telegraph last night, although Singh did say: “We are searching for stability and we have found that over the past couple of weeks. Long may it continue.”
Singh was in the dark about Rovers’ approach for Appleton, who was known by Shaw from Preston connections, and believes a more experienced manager would be beneficial for the club.
Shaw’s efforts to land Appleton, 37, come a little more than a week after he helped produce a statement announcing Bowyer and McPhillips would be in the temporary hot seat until at least the end of the month.
Several of Rovers’ players believe Bowyer deserved longer in the reigns and are even understood to have expressed their thoughts to club directors.
Striker Colin Kazim-Richards last night tweeted: “I hope to god we make it four in four for Gaz and his team.
“To let you know whoever is in charge my priority is the same #Promotion, but I have to say playing under Gaz after the last has been fresh air.
“I'm not talking any manager in particular, I'm just saying that this is the best run we've had this season something's going right.”
Appleton is understand to have grown frustrated at a lack of support in the transfer market at Bloomfield Road, leaving him ready to join Rovers after just two months at the helm at Bloomfield.
He previously enjoyed a caretaker management role at West Brom, before taking charge of crisis club Portsmouth.

Are Shaw and Agnew capable to direct the club? Doubt it!
What ever the outcome BRFC is deeper in trouble with this appointment.

Reading between the lines and in all honesty that's all any of us can do, this appears to be Shaw and Agnew getting one up on Shebby, which can't be a bad thing even if it is nothing short of crass stupidity at the top as usual.
In my opinion not the right person for the job but at the end of the day we do need a manager and nothing that has gone on at Ewood over the last two years or so is his fault.
It looks like the team will be playing for GB tonight and a point or three will give him a good base to work from
Then it's up to him, and I honestly wish him all the luck in the world, after all Venky's have to have an accident and get something right once, don't they?
Clowns running the club above him, boo boys and doomsayers will be on his back after the first mistake, not a job I would like unless there is yet another very good compensation package attached.

Appleton out! We don't want yet another rotten manager. Venkys inherit an excellent manager and sack him. They then appoint Kean, who is rubbish and odious, Berg who is even worse rubbish, and now Appleton, who we know is rubbish before he even joins. Whose next, Donald Duck?

Bowyer was a temporary manager, has done a good job and hopefully another three points tonight, but we need a definite manager that can formulate a squad using this transfer window and Appleton seems like a person who knows the division, is young and ambitious, and is worth a try. Obviously he made himself available having been cheesed off by the lack of ambition shown at Blackpool and lets face it if you had to choose between Blackpool and The Oyston's or Blackburn and the Venkys' there is not much to differentiate them except one lives locally and one doesn't....but and this is a big but Blackburn Rovers are a bigger club with the potential if only we could sort out the in house politics.
I support the move as a step in the right direction. Good luck Michael you have my support but you have to deliver more than your predecessors and quickly!!!!

I'm happy with the recent results we have got and thought GB has organised us better but were making out he was the messiah?
We beat 2 of the worst teams in the league, one of which was crippled with injures and we beat an Alex McLeish side who were getting used to his dire tactics.
Yes 3 wins is 3 wins but I feel we would have won them anyway.

If we are going to get a new manager I would rather we do it know so the new manager has at least 2 weeks of the transfer window to look to bring their own players in rather than appoint him at the end of Jan when he is stuck with the squad, like Berg was!
Appleton might not be my first choice but if he is the man the club want then at least they have for once moved fast and got him in as soon as possible with time to mould the squad in the way he wants before the window shuts.
I live in Blackpool, and their fans aren't that bothered however the one thing they all agree is that the Blackpool team under Appleton is much fitter than it was under Olly and more organised defensively! 2 things that the Rovers team are seriously lacking.

Just when the team was looking more stable and Gary and Terry had got them organised along comes madam D again to muck it all up. Has she got a death wish? Or is she just revengeful on the Rovers fans who were just coming round to the idea that Team GB could actually be getting somewhere. They were as happy as they could be with the latest results, 3 back to back wins. Something not seen at the club for years. Optomism was high for the Wolves match ad beyond. Now we are back to the bad old days of continuous moaning by the fans. When will the Venky's learn? Not in my lifetime it would seem!
I think the optimism you mention should still be high for tonight's match, if the players can raise their game and play for GB and enjoy their football like they did for three games - then we should expect a good game again tonight. A point tonight at Wolves would be a good result whoever is in charge. Its all about the club and not individuals and Rovers were always going to appoint a manager before the end of this month so give the new guy a chance. He is very well thought of in football and can come in and carry-on what GB and team have started.

I agree it is a strange move but those on here saying "Appleton out" need to have a look at themselves. He hasn't even been confimed as being "in" yet.
Just remember how Tony Parkes did - he was fantastic as caretaker, each time he did it he turned our results around and had us playing as a team. But as soon as he was given the job on a permanent basis it started to unravel VERY quickly ultimately resulting in him stepping down (very graciously) and back into his former role. We wouldn't be so lucky with Bowyer, we would end up losing him for good and he's too valuable for that.

Some fans when Berg was appointed where slagging him off about his previous record with other clubs, well just to inform you all....Appletons record: 2 wins in 12, 8 Draws! Results speak for themselves and in my eyes that is just not good enough.
Appletons appointment (if it happens) is because Shaw and Agnew know him and will have an ally against Shebby.
Blackburn Rovers was once, one of the best run clubs around! Now it is being run into the ground.

What has changed? all of a sudden there seems to be a larg section of fans demanding "big name mangers" and things of such like. Now look, i 100%agree that the running of the club is absoloutley shambolic at the moment and it needs sorting sooner rather than later, and the only solution i can see is for venkys to sell up and leave. And aiming our venom and vitriol at them is deserved. But why are we aiming it at potential managers??
Someone tell me what appleton has ever done wrong to this club, someone tell me why appleton cant be a success, someone tell me why a once proud bunch of supporters will no longer give anyone a fair crack of the whip? i seem to remeber similar whinings and rantings when allardyce was linked with the job, sorry to see him leave in the end!! all i am saying is, for christ sake lets give appleton a bloody chance, throw your weigt behind him and the team and who knows, fine if he turns out to be useless, let him have it, but at least let him prove or disprove himself!! we have no given right to "an experienced manger" and the bigger names we have been linked with you havnt bloody wanted anyhow....lets just give him a feckin chance....

Will Derek Shaw resign if we don't get promoted this year. The priority is to get promoted this year therefore he must be sure he has appionted the right person. Not many can see Appleton being able to do this but GB has shown he might but wont be given the time. Derek Shaw must take full responsibility for these actions and must leave the club at the end of the season if we don't get promotion.
Despite my reservations I am first and foremost a Rovers fan and as such I am going to put aside these reservations and will be at matches supporting the players AND the manager and would encourage all who love their club to do the same.

We say GB has the job until the end of the month and the next guy will get a six month contract and see what happens.
We then rush to a rival club and pay them compensation to take a relatively new manager with a poor track record and give him a two and a half year contract !
Will there be a press conference ?
Who will be there ?
Will anybody ask "WHY ARE YOU BEHAVING THIS WAY ?"

Mr Appleton needs to be given a chance, calling for his head is an absolute joke! He may not be the most experienced or the best out there, but he has alot more experience than either Kean or Berg had, and more than GB who by all accounts does not want the job anyway. Give the man a chance. He has alot of good reviews as a coach by some highly respected people in the game. He plays direct football to get results which is what we need to get out of this league. I know they probably have the club at heart but now is a time for uniting behind this appointment. Mullen and Wild do not run the club, if they have the millions required to buy the club then please do so, I am sure they would do better than Venkys unfortunately they don't and won't ever get it from the fans and unfortunately again Venkys do not wish to sell.
So we are about to appoint a young new manager who has experience, we are not privy to the budget allowed for this transaction, we are not aware of the parameters put in place by Venkys, we can moan and moan but it gets us nowhere unless as previously stated you have a spare 20 to 30 million stashed away and you are prepared to back it up with more money. Get real folks with or without Venkys we are stuck in an unenviable position where we do not cover our costs and therefore need outside finance to keep the club afloat....be very careful what you wish for.
The only way out is through success on the field let's just hope for three points tonight and then Appleton can start with two home wins on the bounce to take us to the edge of the playoffs....there isn't it good to be positive. Cup half full or half empty springs to mind with many comments on here.

First Holloway up and leaves and now Appleton - some would say it is careless to lose one manager in a season but to lose two and in less than three months is downright silly. Even sillier than our lot.
Maybe the best you can hope for now is someone like Steve Kean?

It isn't mine nor any fans decision who is appointed by the club - but within reason I am prepared to give anyone who is appointed a fair chance. Including this chap.
Appleton knows full well what he is coming in to, he will be totally clued-up on the Venky's and all the things that have happened since they arrived and he will be aware of what happened with Berg - so it is surely a case of coming in 'with eyes wide-open' for him.
If he thinks he can cope with all that goes with this job these days and still manage to get us some success - cos he knows the penalty for failure - then fair play to the chap. It is a big move - lets hope he is a big enough man to do the job. I think he is - but only time will tell.

Now it is clear to the blind eyed beggar in the main street in Pune that there is no money to be made at Rovers and we are not going to bounce back, so it's all about an exit strategy.
In that respect, Applestrudel is a good appointment, he has experience at Pompey in a club going down the tubes. He'll make no trouble for Venkys and probably be mean enough to ignore any sulks among existing staff.
Pity the poor saps who have been doing OK as temps - they were told they'd got till the end of the month and a week later they're relegated behind Applestrudel and his oppo.

Don't make out Bonlehs some righteous club that wouldn't stand for it. Money talks and the facts are no matter what club or supporter, the owners and money men call the shots and there is f*ck all can be done unless absolutely every single fan without fail unites and has complete and utter mass boycott until the owners sell up, which could take months and months and would therefore be almost impossible to implement.
When we boycott, we're all glory hunters.

Obviously not a full shilling. You're right, our club is in a mess, hence the moaning you thick sh1t.
What would happen if foreign owners were sad enough to want to buy Bonleh FC and turned out to be another Venkys or just as disgusting owners? Would all you slavering tobacco chewing banjo players sit back and do nothing? I very much doubt it.
You've hit the nail right on the head with some of these supporters with rose tinted specs.
Enough is enough. This appointment is the final straw. It just contradicts everything that has been fed to us from the goons within Ewood, since Berg was sacked. We are being LIED to on a daily basis.
If MA is the best that we can do, then there is no hope. This is the final insult, and possibly the final nail in our coffin.
BRFC: Made in Blackburn by decent, honest, hard working and honourable people. DESTROYED in India, by SCUM.
You'd have chased em out of town?
No you wouldn't.
These w4nkers are based thousands of miles away. They don't give two sh1ts about the supporters.
You'd do exactly what we've done.
There'd be dingles who'd boycott, there'd be those who'd pick and chose games, there'd be some that renew ST's and carry on like nothings changed because they will support through thick and thin.
You lot would be falling out with each other EXACTLY like Rovers fans have done.
When we protest, we're all whingers.
If we had 20,000 every other week (like last time we were in this division) we'd be fools for lining Venkys pockets.
Dammed if we do - dammed if we don't.

Why everybody else expects the fans to behave in the most perfect and appropriate way in response to Venkys and co I'm not sure. They seem to have higher expectations of the fans than those making the important decisions. It's all confusing and getting thousands of people to come to a consensus of opinion is impossible.

It`s as simple as that. Don`t whinge or whine just vote with your feet. In the meantime it is a huge Claret welcome to Granny Smith.

I'd take a look on SEM's website as well, no doubt though it'll find itself in the mainstream soon enough. I myself, am relieved to be honest. I don't think Appleton stands a chance with the JA connection cloud hanging over his head and we really do need to get behind him now he's got the job.

Also it seems to be from certain factions that they are never happier than when they are peddling negativeity: Michael Appleton could be the man, remember Howard Kendall had no experience. He didnt do bad!!

As I continually say,you cannot understand what is happening at Rovers if you start from the premise that it has anything to do with football, it's been about money only from day one. Venkys were sold a pup believing they could enhance Venkys image and make money from the Premiership. All strategies, nurseries, Europe, breakthrough in India were ill-conceived and ill-advised.
