Berg 'bitterly disappointed' over Blackburn Rovers sack
3:43pm Thursday 27th December 2012 in Sport
Henning Berg
HENNING Berg says he is ‘bitterly disappointed’ after being sacked by Blackburn Rovers today.
Berg was dismissed this morning after only 10 games in charge, the last of which was a 1-0 defeat at Middlesbrough yesterday.
The Norwegian has now released a statement via the League Managers Association.
It read: "It goes without saying that I am bitterly disappointed to have been relieved of my managerial duties at Ewood Park after just 57 days since my appointment.
"At this stage I would just like to release a short statement thanking the Blackburn Rovers fans for their incredible support during my time in charge.
“I have always enjoyed a fantastic relationship with them dating back to my playing days where we shared some great memories.
“It was an honour for me to manage a club that is so close to my heart and I now wish all of them every success for the rest of the season and beyond.
"I would also like to thank the players and staff for their support and commitment in this short period.
“They have all done their best and unfortunately the results in these 10 games have not reflected their performances.
"I wish the club all the best in the future, and am sure that with a few additions in the January transfer window they will have a good chance of getting a play-off place."

All the best Henning, you are best away from the utter shambles that is BRFC.
This is just another installment of the joke that is how to run a football club by absolutely clueless owners.
The players must also have a good hard look in the mirror though.

Sir Alex , Harry Redknapp, The special one or Mark Hughes or any other name would not be able to pull us out the nose dive we are in.
The Premier League are the villains here allowing the present owners to take charge it is quite clear that the demise started on their appointment.
In my opinion until they are gone we will continue in the same vein whoever the man in charge is.
Yes it is true we are the laughing stock of football from Lands End to John o Groats with no solution anywhere close,

it was the wrong appointment in the first place, when will the regime realise running a football club is not quite the same as running a chicken farm, as l expected henning berg left with a dignified statement,a nice guy who was on a loser from day 1,
The statement did forget to thank the Vekys for their contribution to his Pension Fund...a good reason for his change of mind in the first place???

I fear anyone in football will shun Ewood unless they are desparate for the money
Rovers will be offering another fabulous Half Season ticket offer to welcome the new man - it beggars belief how they have the face to blame everybody but themselves - Venkys & Singh have a proven track record - the worst ever - at leasty Portsmouth woin the FA Cup when they were going down the tubes - Rovers fans have had nothing for two years and the barren spell looks like continuing while Venkys are around

MerlinTheVoiceofReaswhy would he thank the people that just sacked him? Not sure why he thanked the fans even especially if he had read some of the poison on here that was directed towards him.
on2 wrote:
Note carefully that Berg has thanked the fans and the staff not the management/ owners.
Berg is well out of it and I hope he goes on to have a successful managerial career elsewhere in England. He is/was good enough to turn things round and we were unlucky at Boro not to have got anything. With the Jan window we could have started to have some success and now instead we are plunged back into uncertainty at a crucial time of the season....
Hughes In? Doubt it somehow, more likely to be the Ali and Singh show.

Three years contract paid up. Laughing all the way to the bank. Not bad for 57 days work. Nice Christmas present from the Venky's. doesn't need to work again. Pension for life. These sort of pay offs will attract anybody to the managers job. Who's next? Form an orderly queue.

Did Glen Mullan make Venkys sack SA ?
Did Glen Mullen get rid of JW, TF, JG ?
Did Glen Mullan make Venkys appoint SK and then make them keep him long after it was clear to everyone in world football that he should have gone ?
Did Glen Mullan waste money (skim off millions ?) in 4 transfer windows on cr@p players ?
Did Glen Mullan have any say in the appointment of HB ?
I think even you, Mr Nut-case will see that Glen had nothing to do with any of these events.
You may have a personal grudge against Glen (for non Rovers reasons) but please don't try to twist history to add vent to your dislike of the man - it just makes you look even more stupid that you already propably are.

I would love to see Kean back! That would just sum up the whole fiasco. As I am not going to the matches it would not bother me but it would be hilarious to think that Mrs D could stick two fingers up to the whole of the Rovers faithful fans who have stuck by them through thick and thin. To be treated with such disdain would just about put the final nail in the Venky's coffin.

Berg has the worst record as a manager in World football so how can anyone say the sacking is wrong?Fact Berg should never have been appointed, nor should 90% of the short list that has been drawn up for his replacement all massive failures at previous clubs, it just amazes me how these people even get considered for such a role.
Take Hughe's the bookies favourite, he had an ok time at Rovers when we had a much better squad than we have now, but he walked out on the club. Hughe's got lucky in the transfer window a few times which is what you need when he was last at the Rovers, but he has done nothing since. Sacked by Man City, arguably the same at Fulham although he claims he resigned with no job to go to, the truth will never be known, he was then sacked at QPR after spending a small fortune and guiding them to the bottom of the league so how is he right for us. Someone please tell me how Hughes even gets a job again on stupid money let alone be favourite for us! You can say the same also for most of the others on the list as well. Jewel, nothing at Derby, nothing at Ipswich, Kean the same as well, failed everywere he has ever managed, why are we even thinking of these people. I suppose at least if Kean is appointed the fans can keep the same banners Kean out for 4 months down the line. Demattao, please guys, Europe is calling after winning the Champions league and fans think he will come to the Rovers, get real.
Rovers need someone like Odriscoll or Curbishly, proven football men who will role their sleeves up and restore Rovers to what we should be, or Solkshire a young manager that is quietly gaining a lot of admires for the way he goes about his business.
Please Venkys do not appoint Hughes, lets get someone who can restore the Rovers to its former glory not someone who has been sacked for failing at multiple clubs in the past.

How on earth can sacking a good truthful person be a step forward for this club full of liars and cheats?
There are a lot of nodding dogs with heads full of cliches pretending that the numb owners have done the right thing. You ain't seen nothing yet, they are dispicable representatives of doom, and if you want to follow that carry on nodding.
How dare they leave a lying untrustworthy lawbreaker in charge spouting rubbish for two years and overseeing top proffessionals leave, turning many fans against their lack of proffessionalism, de valuing the club to a large degree, and then when a Gentleman arrives show him the door after a fraction of that time?
They should be held accountable for their many crimes against the Rovers and if they could be botherd to visit their club, should be deported for such crimes. They are scum, very wealthy scum, but never the less scum.

Why endure Kean - loathed from day1 by all Rovers fans - for so long then boot out Berg, former club legend, so fast.
I wish I believed we would now get in a real managerial heavyweight. We won't though. After the usual PR bull about Mourinho or Fergie (ok, Hughes and Di Mateo) will probably give one of the ball boys a run. Cheap and desperate enough to risk their reputation in the Venkys madhouse. Ideal.

But I have to say you did way to good a job and your cover was blown. Thank goodness we did not pay you in advance. Still, it has been a nice little earner for you. Blackburn Rovers have identified Roberto Di Matteo as the man they want to succeed Henning Berg and are already in the process of replacing the Norwegian’s backroom team, Goal.com can reveal.
Berg was relieved of his duties on Tuesday night after Rovers’ 1-0 defeat at Middlesbrough brought an end to his 57-day reign as Steve Kean's successor.
The likelihood of Champions League winner Di Matteo accepting the job remains remote, while the early bookies' favourite Mark Hughes – a former manager at Ewood Park – has distanced himself from the post.
The Blackburn hierarchy were on Wednesday already sorting out a management team for the weekend’s game against Barnsley, and met with former Aston Villa coach Kevin MacDonald in order to try and rubber stamp his appointment as caretaker boss.
MacDonald is set to be joined by Judan Ali, described as a rising star in coaching, and a man whose cause global advisor Shebby Singh championed when Kean left the club.
It is understood that Alex McLeish was discussed at the meeting with MacDonald – the pair worked together at Villa Park - and could switch his interest to Rovers, but the former Scotland manager was announced as the new Nottingham Forest on Thursday evening.
MacDonald and Ali are expected to be joined in some capacity by midfielder Danny Murphy, who was brought to the club in the summer with a view to getting him involved on the coaching side.
Colin Hendry and Gary Bowyer, the only senior members of staff remaining after all decks were cleared, took training. Hendry, the former club captain, had been demoted to the position of reserve team coach earlier this month.
Singh, Derek Shaw and Paul Agnew, the trio who collectively decided to compromise their own wishes to make the decision to appoint Berg 10 games ago, have been urged to employ an experienced manager to appease the supporters.
Di Matteo has that at Championship level after winning promotion with West Brom in 2010, but is unlikely to drop down the divisions after success at Chelsea.
The club took five weeks to get Berg in, a candidate who was nobody’s first choice, but Rovers are determined to make a swift appointment and put in place a backroom staff to entice the right sort of manager to Ewood Park

His record at Mallorca is very impressive, got them to 5th in La Liga in 2010 (won his first 10 home games) despite financial difficulties but was unable to to stay because they couldn't afford to offer him another contract.
Sacked by Atletico Madrid in 2011 for finishing 10th with them. Still though, very good CV.
The problem though is, is that this is the championship and we need a proven manager for this league. Manzano would be for the unlikely event that we get to the Premier League.
MacDonald will be caretaker boss, not permanent manager, then he'll go to assistant manager and Judan Ali is hired as a coach.
DiMatteo would be great, but never ever going to happen.
I have absolutely no clue who will be hired. You can't predict anything with our club.

The truth behind Henning's appointment and the 5 weeks it took was that nobody else wanted the job. I see Shuggy and his sidekick Hendry picking the team for sometime yet until SS can persuade another potential manager with nothing to lose to take over.

...but this is even worse - as not only Ali and Singh would be involved with running the team - we would also have McDonald and Hendry and Murphy all involved in different capacities. What a diabolical mess awaits us. I wonder if all the fans that never wanted Berg to be given a chance in the first place and that have been on his back for weeks now and posted how pleased they were with his sacking today are having second thoughts now?
Berg was being his own man and doing things his own way and would have helped get our club back on winning ways given time and restored some much needed dignity to the town in the process.
Now it seems we will have 100% Venky people in place, none of them honest Rovers men like Berg - but all of them money-grabbing opportunists who have no love for the club or for the people of Blackburn. The only love they have is for their ever increasing bank accounts God help the club now it is perhaps lost to us forever.

How can anyone say Bergs sacking is wrong Berg has the worst record as a manager in World football so how can anyone say the sacking is wrong?Fact Berg should never have been appointed, nor should 90% of the short list that has been drawn up for his replacement all massive failures at previous clubs, it just amazes me how these people even get considered for such a role. Kevin Aspin
I caught a few minutes of one of the Sky season reviews last night and Rovers were in fifth - ahead of Arsenal - and a point outside the top four.
Hughes saved us from relegation, stabilised the team, got us playing some pretty decent football which got us into Europe.
......plus he made us the thick end of £40mill in transfers
Sounds a bit more than OK.
And leaving the club? Any ambitious manager having proved himself at this level would have done. Get real, we couldn't hang on to our top players even when Uncle Jack (RIP) was here.
There is no way he will come back in any case; he has still got a semblance of common sense.

Hughes won't be coming, nor will De Matteo, in fact no-one of any repute will be anywhere near this club while the circus continues.
Also there'll be no promotion this year or next, not even the play-offs. We are heading in the other direction. FUBAR.
No structure, no finances and with Shebby, no idea either.
I'm sad that now in our 3rd year under these owners, we are still suffering and see no end in sight.
To BRAG I say, issue a statement distancing yourselves from Shebby and have nothing to do with the conman, you are being tarnished through association.

If it is put out as a proper statement to the club VIA the media or a fans forum that this is the start of the boycotting of the club, until some drastic action is taken, the owners and Singh will have to react.
It was very obvious at the meeting at Blakeys, that Singh was sent in oder to get the fans back through the turstiles and I firmly believe that all fans have an ideal opportunity to show him and the owners what we think. Funds were collected VIA a facebook account to arrange for the plane message. This time, a similar type of arrangment with a couple of adverts in the national papers would be a unique and effective way of Garnering real publicity.
I am not saying this is a perfect soultion, but it;'s a start and one worth trying!

The search for a new manager is being conducted by Shebby Singh, the former television presenter who is Blackburn's 'global adviser' on a reported salary of pounds 400,000 a year.
Singh approached MacDonald, who won two of seven games during a spell as caretaker manager at Villa, last month about becoming Berg's assistant. Now he appears to be the most likely candidate for the job, although there was speculation last night that Judan Ali, a Londoner of Asian heritage, could be involved in the new coaching set-up.

Blackburn's Indian owners are preparing to appoint English professional football’s first British Asian coach, a 39-year-old former Arsenal trainee who until recently was running a community youth programme in Dagenham.
Judan Ali has also been the subject of ‘below average’ Bollywood movie Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal but his coaching experience hardly qualifies him to step in at Ewood Park in the wake of Henning Berg’s shock dismissal. Ali’s finest achievement to date was leading an Indian Under 15 side to victory in Arsenal’s ‘football festival’ in 2011.
Berg was sacked on Thursday after just 57 days and a run of one win from 10 games that has left Blackburn 17th in the Championship.
Before his departure he had, however, met Ali, who had spent a week observing the Norwegian former Rovers defender at the club’s Brockhall headquarters.
Ali’s Twitter page has been taken down but on it, he had described himself as ‘an independent football coach leading those who want to further themselves on the world stage and to surpass the elite’.
London-born Ali, whose family moved to the UK from India, was on Arsenal’s books as a YTS trainee but blamed the racist culture within English football in the 80s and 90s for his failure to secure a professional contract in this country. He played for Spanish club Murcia before his coaching career.
Blackburn are said to be comfortable seeing how the arrangement with MacDonald and Ali works out, and will not rush into appointing a more high-profile manager.
‘My goal is to become the first British Asian Premier League manager,’ he said. ‘I want to take a country to the World Cup and the 2022 tournament in Qatar is my goal.
‘It’s a myth that British Asians cannot play football. I hope I’m showing young Asians in this country that they can make it and that things are changing from the experiences I suffered as a teenager.’
Ali’s appointment will form part of a move by Venky’s to assume closer control of the club. When they became the Premier League’s first Indian owners two years ago, the Rao family talked about tapping into Blackburn’s Asian community and offering a route into English football for young players from their homeland. They have plans to open an academy near the company headquarters in Pune.
From all the above information it seems clear that the Venkys master plan to make the Rovers an 'English-Asian' club is now one step closer to fruition. Not sure how else you can view/read the latest developments? Could it be a ground-breaking innovation in global football or could it just be another sorry fiasco in the downward spiral that the Rovers have been in since Venkys took over the club? I know which I would bet on!

One statement from Shebby Singh's interview on Sky Sports News sums up our current plight perfectly. That statement is "I think we are always smarter after something happens. There are many people out there who are very, very clever but they are not in a position like me to make decisions." The problem is that there is no one on the inside of the club at present who is capable of making informed footballing decisions. Singh is nothing more than a comical figure who is rapidly taking our club towards the First Division and football oblivion. Talk of regaining Premiership status is getting more fanciful by the second. Singh has got to go.
You can't be a natural Darrener, you must be an imigrant as you know nothing about loyalty. Darreners stick together and never jibb out. You have jibbed out so Just like Mullen and Shebby, consider yourself potted.

If venkys have to keep on paying up three year contracts, thats taking out money that could have been spent on players and coaching staff. What reasonable manager would come and work where he gets sacked after 57 days without making one signing?
Keep up your moaning, soon we will have the quality watch seller from Delhi 7 day market.

It has always been about business for them.
The advice they got from JA at the start was essentially " listen to us, we can make you famous and successful , and make money as an incubator for young talent." The fallback position was always the knowledge that the assets on the pitch were always worth more than what they paid for the club.
Plan A clearly failed, unfortunately it failed so badly that Kean managed to burn most of Plan B in the process.
What we are seeing now are the last desperate attempts of Venkys and their latest advisor, the self publicist, SS, to try to salvage something from the wreckage, even if its turning BRFC into a global publicity stunt while the parachute payments last. As this is the blind leading the blind, then they will be led astray again by all kinds of chancers.
I just hope Bristol City haven't made any plans for their share of the 3rd round Cup match revenue.

There are only two paths back to sanity: (a) a buyer emerges (Venkys are known to want to sell ASAP) or (b) they fade away as shareholders only and appoint a proper Chairman, CEO and CFO to head up a quality management team.
Until then we can only expect more embarrassing chaos.

Think what you like about the Supporters but eventhose who despise Rovers so much could not have dreamt up these story lines.
Only a letter from the Telegraph supported with the names and addresses of fans and their season ticket number can hopefully infliuence Venkys to either sell up or get someone other than Singh a Malayasian PR Man who has no knowledge of the Championship and a dismal track record in decision making already
Glen Mullan is right it will take a lot more than £3 Million to dig Rovers out of this hole - maybe Administration is the only option to take the club forward by starting again.

For one, I can not see any investment in the club from the Venky's, any money spent has come from player sales and from the FA.
Also to rip the management infrastructure out of a club and replacing it with the present incumbent is like replacing a solid RSJ with a jelly. The walls inevitably will come tumbling down.
Employing the cheapest option is not the best option. If the Venkys were serious about promotion, then they would have replaced Kean many months ago and allowed the new manager to build his team with his own philosophy and not be expected to play some non entity signed on the off chance they could be worth something in the future.
As for Hendry, how he has managed to avoid the cull astounds me. Totally ineffective!!
I really hope that Blackburn Rovers can get out of this mess, but with the like of Venky's, Shebby and Hendry still there, I'm afraid the future looks bleak.
I wish all BRFC fans all the best and hope that the club hits bottom sooner rather than later otherwise there could be no bouncing back from oblivion.

That's right folks, we are in no rush for a new manager!
They sack Berg just before the Jan transfer window and will probably spend 4 weeks trawling through a list of desperate wannabes, pick the worst possible candidate (of course) who'll be lumbered with Keans (just typing that name makes me ill) team of overpaid, unmotivated has beens and powder puffs.
There really is nothing left to say on the whole f*cking shambles.
The club is on a life support machine and Shebby Singh - SHEBBY F*CKING SINGH has got his finger on the switch.

There's no hurry because each week without a manager is a week's wages saved - it's a simple and as bad as that. No signings during the window, sell some players - Rhodes, Martin Olly, Dann, Givet back to France - then check what's left in the kitty, then bankruptcy.

Instead we have a so-called pundit who the clueless Rao Family have allowed to embark upon an ego trip. Singh is nothing more than a comical figure who is rapidly taking our club towards the First Division and football oblivion. Talk of regaining Premiership status is getting more fanciful by the second. Singh has got to go. He has left our club devoid of credibility and devoid of hope as he continues to play his own version of fantasy football.

He also played alot of higher standard non league football and is currently doing a good job at Hayes and Yeading. He cannot comprehend Rovers even approaching Jadan Ali he simply hasnt coached adults and only youth coached at local level.
I ask anyone at Ewood to please think again this could well end in tears, pick a hungry young manager who is currently employed. This circus must end now and a new fresh management team be put in place. Mr Singh MUST stay out of the footballing side and the new management be given time to rebuild.

However, it's gone far enough. I've been supporting BFC for 50yrs and more, and I genuinely feel for the true Blackburn supporters who have had their club stolen from them by foreigners who don't know their corner flags from their centre spots. It's a real tragedy that a traditional club, like mine, can be shafted by the likes of these idiots. So, whilst enjoying your discomfort, after all the posturing and insults we've endured over the years of Jack's millions, I feel for the real supporters who have lost their club to the morons.
We were disparaging of the way Jack bought the Premiership, but at least he was a genuine, local fan, who chose to spend his money on his beloved club. Would that there were more like him today.
I hope you find a way out of this mess and look forward to many more derbies, but please, apply a note of realism - your prospects are now no greater than ours. I truly hope you are able to find a way to give the club back to the fans, who are the bedrock of any football club. Owners come and go, but we are the only constant. You must feel gutted that your club is no longer yours.
Good luck for the future, but forgive my moment of schadenfreude! (Enjoying others misfortunes).

I and I am sure most fans have reached the end of the tether with the Venkys. Why can they not just go away for good. I think the club is now in great danger than at any time in its history of going out of business; no organisation, however prosperous can survive this onslaught of incompetence. The Indians have not got a clue and should be utterly ashamed of themselves. On a general note this does nothing for Anglo-Asian relations and has done much harm; it must be doing a lot of damage to companies wishing to invest in the Asian market and vice-versa.
I think you will find that most businesses are not that shallow. In the big scheme of things who do you actually think BRFC are?

Venkys bought Rovers to penetrate the European markets for their chicken products hence the drive to play in a Europe wide champions league. In business the most risky strategy other than new product in a new market is same product in a new market, in this case Venkys chicken products in the new market of Europe. So rather than open venkys chicken shops across Europe and hope like hell people buy your products you look to establish brand recognition by generating some free publicity by buying a football club, run it well and then through the process of brand association (people assume that if you run your club well then you will do the same with your.chicken shops and products and you buy their products). But that is where it has gone rather wrong for dear Venkys. A very sophisticated PR campaign diverted flack away from the Venkys brand and onto the supporters in the Kean out period but no matter what they do no PR campaign can deflect what Singh has done this time. The nationals are widely read across Europe so to the person who posted can we do any more, just leave Singh to carry on.

Burnley fan in peace (?). Look, we're all enjoying the mess you're in, and, just when we think it can't get any better....! The gift that keeps on giving!
Had it not been for the trust looking to sell, it could have happened to any of the clubs. Had Burnley been in the premiership, it could have quite easily been you - and could still happen. This isnt about rivalries against neighbouring clubs, its about the systematic destruction of British clubs by foreign owners who have no idea how to run them. We aren't the first, and sadly we won't be the last until the FA and bodies get their fingers out.

How do you get that??
I didnt realise the bookies decided who gets to be manager.
Only an official statement is an "in the running" statement of intent,
Notice how the media use such vague language as ".. understands that" and "sources suggest.." etc.
I've said it before and I'll say it again - if Andy hasn't confirmed its an official statement, I'd take all these rumours with a pinch of salt. There has been absolutely no official suggestions at all that any of these people are lined up for the managers job, just like the Redknapp and OGS rumours before them.
Why everyone is getting caught up in the media frenzy to demean us more than we already have been, is beyond me. Next there will be talk of more boycotts by the doom mongers and the same media will start calling us the worst fans again for reacting to the cr@p they print.
Bit like the billy McKinley thing when her berg got the job, and of course, when the boro game finished certain individuals knew berg had gone that evening, er did I miss Andys breaking news
But just to add to that, Andy has apologised before when he's got it wrong which hasn't been very often.

whittaker0 wrote:Are you serious with your "this does nothing for Anglo-Asian relations" comment?
Go and give yourself an upper cut.

He put the squad in place at Turf Moor for Coyle, and he was very unlucky at Forest, where he fell the victim of new owners, having saved the club from relegation. He also did a great job at Notts County, leading the club to promotion. Portsmouth was a difficult club for any manager given the club's financial plight.
Who are the managers out there who can take on the job?
There are quite a few with experience of managing in championship or prem and already had taste of getting teams promoted.
Simon Grayson
Owen Coyle
Roy Keane
Billy Davies
Allan Curbishley
Gareth Southgate

As for Curbs, he's been to inactive for too long to get my vote and would hardly be deemed progressive. The point is though, where the hell do we go now and who the hell would want to come to us. I have been worried several times before, but things just seem to get worse and worse. Where will this end. These parasites should not be allowed any involvement with a football club whatsoever
Only Curbishley is the right man for the job in my opinion, going off his experience and track record. But I am pretty sure he would not touch the job anyway, best we can hope for now, is for a good upcoming manager, who is prepared to put his reputation on the line to take the job.
