Swimmer Will follows in footsteps of Olympian sister Sam

WILL Murray is following in the slipstream of his Olympic medal winning sister after starring in an international swimming event.

The younger brother of Sam Murray (right) – who won silver in the modern pentathlon at London 2012 – struck gold himself at a home nations swimming gala in Sunderland. Competing for England in the WISE (Wales, Ireland, Scotland, England) Schools International, Murray stormed to victory in the Boys 100m Freestyle in a new personal best time of 54.47secs. The 15-year-old Bowland High School pupil also helped the boys’ medley and freestyle relay teams to victory as England went on to win the fixture.

Murray, who is a member of Clitheroe Dolphins, is now expected to be selected to represent Great Britain schools in Brazil next year.

And there was more good news for the Murray household as 13-year-old Oliver, who also goes to Bowland High School, impressed in the British Modern Triathlon Championships in Solihull. The event combines swimming with shooting and running – three of the disciplines in the Modern Pentathlon – and Oliver and club-mate Clitheroe Royal Grammar School pupil, Hannah Procter, aged 11, have been inspired by Sam’s success.

Oliver finishing in 12th place in the Youth C Boys category while Hannah – competing in only her second competition and after only five shooting lessons – finished in 16th place in the Youth D Girls category.
