Arsenal join chase for Burnley striker Austin

BURNLEY are set for a battle to keep hold of striker Charlie Austin in January, with Arsenal joining a crop of Premier League clubs clamouring to keep tabs on the current top scorer in Europe.

The 20-goal striker’s stock has risen through his club record-breaking scoring feats this season, and he is expected to be hot property once the transfer window opens in the new year.

The Gunners, who are in need of an attacking boost following the August sale of Robin van Persie, are understood to have scouted Austin for the last four games, but face competition from Liverpool, Aston Villa and Reading among others, as well as Newcastle United, who have tracked the former Swindon Town hot-shot the longest.

It is not yet clear whether any of Austin’s admirers are plotting a January bid, or whether they will wait until the summer, by which time he will only have 12 months left to run on the contact he signed under former boss Eddie Howe.

As yet there have been no attempts by Burnley to discuss a new deal.

But clubs keen on the striker could be priced out of a January move in any case, with Burnley expected to be looking to at least match the £7million fee that Jay Rodriguez commanded in his move to Southampton before considering a sale.

Austin’s value is increasing with every goal. In addition, English footballers are always in greater demand, so clubs could be tempted to bide their time until the end of the season.

But the former bricklayer, who was Howe’s first signing as Burnley boss, is paying little attention to speculation.

Instead his focus is on boosting his goal tally and, in turn, the Clarets’ points return as they look to push even higher up the Championship table.

“The lads worked hard and it was a massive result for us because after Saturday.

“With a new manager coming in everyone’s saying ‘we’ll see what happens’, but we showed our class,” said Austin, after his 83rd minute winner against Leeds United on Tuesday made him the quickest Claret to hit 20 goals in a season, beating Andy Lochhead’s long-standing record from the 1966/67 season by eight games.

“In a game like that, a derby, it was massive – just to get the goal at that time, it was really good for us.

“We’re not a team that should be down there fighting, we’re a team that should be up there in and around the play-offs,” he said.

And he admitted that while the records are a bonus, he places more importance on a positive outcome for the team.

“To score 20 goals in any season is brilliant. I’m happy I got there but I’m a team player and my goals help the team, and that’s what it did in a 1-0 win,” said Austin, who has scored in six consecutive home games.

“It’s nice to break the records but it’s all about winning for Burnley Football Club. If the records keep coming then great.”

To that end, Austin has been encouraged by the Clarets’ new-found resilience, after recording back-to-back wins and clean sheets under new boss Sean Dyche, despite having the worst defensive record in the division after a 4-0 defeat at Cardiff City, before his appointment, less than two weeks ago.

“Throughout the whole team it (defending) wasn’t the best. The lads were disappointed conceding the goals, but we knew if we just cut that out we would push on and kick on and that’s what we’re doing,” he added.

I expect him to be on the move in Jan. If a bigger club come in for him like Bournemouth, he'll be off like a shot.

Please nobody bid for him in January, and then come the end of the season you can get him for 3-4 million as his contract is running down and Burnley would have no option but to sell on the cheap. Loving it

Anyway, I just wanted to come on this page to ridicule the idea of a Burnley player being wanted by Arsenal!

If this happens, I will sign for Man Utd, dislodge old Wayne from the team and finish top scorer in Europe.

He still has 18mth in Jan and a year to go in June. I misread the desperation in your post that "his contract is running down and Burnley would have no option but to sell on the cheap". Whilst factually correct, his contract is getting shorter and shorter every day, we wouldn't have to sell on the cheap next summer.

Doesn't really matter whether Burnley get £1 million for him or £10 million for him. When you look at the Jay Rodriguez deal you have to again wonder where the bulk of that fee has gone to. When Austin goes Burnley will try to replace him with some cheap no-mark from Wiltshire or wherever else. Got lucky with Austin but might not do next time they go signing non-league players.

Midas, if you don't sell, and if Austin allows his contract to wind down, then you risk getting nothing for him when he is a free agent. How many players in the past have kept delaying contract talks, and then gone for nothing? If I was in charge at Burnley, I would first try and get him to sign an extension asap, and if he refused, then I would take the best acceptable bid that comes in January. If it gets past the January window and he has neither signed an extension, or been sold, then I would start to get very worried, as very few players attain their actual value in the transfer market when their contracts haven't long to run. And if/when this happens we will all be laughing our socks off over here.

One of two things will be happening I would have thought:

A) We are trying to negotiate a new contract with him which will give us more money when he leaves and him some security if he gets injured - this clause will doubtless have a release clause should a club bid x amount of money for him.

Or B) He has already said he won't sign a new agreement - this being the case he will definitely not be allowed to leave for nothing. I would imagine that he will leave Burnley in the summer for £8 million plus

And bless you for caring, but we managed to get £7 million for Rodriguez and he had just a year left on his contract - imagine what fee we can get for 30 goal plus Austin in the summer?

And as for 'laughing your socks off' - compared to the amount of laughs you fools have given us Burnley fans in recent years with the Venkys/Steve Kean/Anderson/Shebby Singh and now Henning Berg fiascos, then I am glad that Burnley selling the best striker most of us have ever seen is amusing to you, god knows you need the laughter in your life supporting those set of no-marks.

I know you had the crushing experience of Junior Holliet stringing your club along for 18 months, pretending he was interested in signing a new contract but your post is, like most things in Blackburn, premature.
.
There are three transfer windows in which to sell him before his contract runs out. If he hasn't gone in Jan he will be sold in the summer.
.
There is as much chance of him running down his contract as there is with Rhodes.

It is really quite amusing to see all these posts from the Chicken Shed especially when it is concerning a LET driven article, there doesn't seem to be this sort of speculation in other newspapers.

What can we premise from their postings

a) The smell of fear for what will happen 2nd December (much better than the smell of chicken manure)
b) Most certain and definite are the green faces of jealousy being shown over how BFC can bring prolific strikers though the set up
c) Charlie is a "Watch this Space player" in the same way Danny Ings, Marvin Bartley, Cameron Stewart, Sam Vokes, Ben Mee and Kieran Trippier are.
d) The togetherness that BFC have not only among themselves but the rapport with and from the fans is something not seen at BRFC

So to conclude: I see envy from all those who post in between 'crowing' about their team.

Already fans are calling for Bergs head. What a poor set of supporters, having them behind you is akin to having pit props made of Balsa Wood

Actually the posts I have read are saying that for the first time in two years we played some good football against Huddersfield. It is far to early to be judging Berg yet, and many of us are quite excited at the prospect of watching us play football for a change. On paper we are much better than you and come derby day I fully expect this to show, for goodness sake you're virtually a one man team.

You're forgetting Midas in this day and age the players hold all the cards, just wait and see, and you will find out that you can't sell a player if he turns the move down. The only time to my mind when a player who is running down his contract leaves for his full worth is when you can get several rich clubs to enter an auction for his services. I think his level atm is probably mid-premier league level, and if this is the case how many teams have a spare £8m+ to spend on a player, if we were to be honest he is unproven at the highest level. Okay we spent around £8m on Rhodes, but that is precisely my point that no other premier league team tried to outbid us as they saw him as unproven at the top level. Anyway we will find out in the next 18 months who is right, shame we can't put money on it - easy money for me.

Well Kermit the time for laughing at Rovers appears to be coming near to an end. Kean is gone; Venky's haven't sold all our best players after our relegation, and have in fact splashed out money on players and have promised even more money to get us up; and Berg is a manager who tries to play football, so when he gets this team fully fit and well-drilled the only way is up. Can't wait for the derby, maybe when we stuff you Austin will put in a transfer request just in time for the January window.

Hmmm, trying to comfort your mind that Austin will stay by suggesting it's nonsense eh? Well I admire your positive stance that good old Charlie cares enough about your unimportant football club not to move in January but I think deep down, heart of hearts, you know all to well as soon as there's a sniff of a big club in for him he'll be off quicker than you can say Owen Coyle.

Comparing him to those players you mention is way off the mark. Why? Because Austin is straight out of the top draw and the truth is (banter aside) he'll have a field day against the Rovers defence because it's the worst I've seen it in 30 years.

When Austin goes Burnley will try to replace him with some cheap no-mark from Wiltshire or wherever else. Got lucky with Austin but might not do next time they go signing non-league players.
At least Burnley know they are a selling club. Woevers still have delusions of granduer even though they have been shafted and stripped bear by the chicken makers.

I'll let you into a secret shall I? There are only probably 10 clubs in England that are buying clubs all the rest are selling and little old Woevers are not one of them.

I expect him to be on the move in Jan. If a bigger club come in for him like Bournemouth, he'll be off like a shot.
You are not even funny..........I am mystified as to why I am wasting my time responding to this. Your comments are often obtuse and are regarded as laconic by some other 'commentators' on this site, but.........oh I cannot be bothered! I must learn to be more circumspect and consider life beyond this drivel ( both yours and mine............)
