When all is said and done all that really matters is whether you are grateful for what you have got.

If you get something for free, should you be happy it was free? Or should you expect better even though someone else went out of their way to ensure it was free.

Let me talk this through with you. So as to protect identities, let’s call those involved friend number one and friend number two.

With only days to go before birthday bash, friend number one pleads and pleads with me to get him some prices from friend number two who happens to own a cake making business.

After a few conversations about there not being enough time and so forth, friend number two decides that he will do the whole job for free because that is what friends are for.

Friend number one is overjoyed. I play ‘Aquarius - Let The Sunshine In’ by the Fifth Dimension and life is just great.

Then the problem begins.

There are two types of people. There are those who will know that having got the cake for free and saved a lot of money they should be thankful.

In fact they might even go as far to let the minor issues go unnoticed because they did in fact get the cake for free.

And then there are people like friend number one. These ungrateful so-and-sos decide to make a big issue out of the cake being delivered ten minutes late and there not being enough icing on it.

And he then goes on to moan that it was my fault all along and I should never have got him the free cake.

Of course this leads me to question the whole issue of doing a favour for people.

There really is no way of making some people happy and it is better not to try at all.

So from now on if you want your cake and want to eat it too – please don’t come to me.
