CHARITY and the giving of alms to the poor is an important part of the Islamic faith and especially during the month of Ramadhan.
But sadly there are increasing numbers of people geared up to exploit the generosity of others for their own personal gain.
Police and councillors have reported that gangs of East European beggars have appeared across East Lancashire to prey on the religious consciences of people going to mosques and even to doorknock their homes asking for money.
Although not Muslim themselves these unscrupulous people have clearly educated themselves enough about the religion to know that people will be reluctant to pass them by without donating money.
Lancashire police’s community cohesion co-ordinator has urged Muslims to give only to legitimate charities and registered collectors.
They should also take action to clear the streets of these unscrupulous professional beggars.
The principle of giving money to help those worse off than we are is laudable and there are plenty of established avenues available where you can be certain that your contribution will reach only those with genuine needs.
