JIMMY McIlroy is such a popular figure in Burnley that Turf Moor was the perfect choice for the presentation of his MBE.

The legendary former inside forward might be from Northern Ireland but he is Burnley through and through.

The 79-year-old moved to the town as an 18-year-old in 1950 and even after retiring from the game he remained in the town, which he still calls home.

His role in the team was vital and led to one of the greatest periods in the club’s history.

Jimmy was loved by the fans and that affection was returned to the club and the town. He took the unusual decision to forgo a trip to Buckingham Palace in favour of Turf Moor as the venue for his MBE presentation.

His popularity is such that it was no surprise to see thousands of fans taking to their seats early on Saturday to see his big moment.

Jimmy is from an era in football that has long since passed. But football fans remember the true greats.

He now has a stand at Turf Moor named after him as well as the Freedom of Burnley and now an MBE.

Most fans will agree that there could not be a more deserving, or humble, recipient.
