I am not a fat person. I used to be, but somehow I lost it when I was four.

However, that cannot be said for millions of Britons and it looks like there are going to millions more soon.

Apparently by the year 2010 there will be 13 million obese people in the UK.

Not fat people but clinically obese' people - it seems one is worse than the other these days.

First there were overweight people and now somehow all the skinny people got together and have got us all using a whole new term.

Soon we'll be treating obese people like immigrants. We know they are human beings but there is something different about them.

Whilst the government looks for solutions let me tell you this for free - there are none.

Unless that is we stop promoting unhealthy food and drink at international sports events.

You would think that such spectacles would have the sponsors to match.

But instead we get the message - watch sport and just stuff your face whilst you are doing it.

The less healthy the food and drink - the more money there is to be made out of it.

Simple really. It doesn't take genius to figure out why our children love junk food.

There are more adverts for it than for healthy food.

In the past fifteen years things have also gone downhill health wise for your average Briton.

Take me for example.

I am pretty average. I do everything on an average basis and whilst I talk a good game I am still pretty average when I end up doing it.

I never went to a cinema until I was seventeen. I never had a computer when I was kid and still can't tell the difference between an X-Box and a Playstation.

Take out food was a treat and we only ever had it about once every six months - or when my brother brought some home from Cha Chas (Uncle's) takeaway.

My days were spent on the streets playing football or just running around the neighbourhood making up new games.

Today if you kick a ball in the street they call the police and soon enough you have an ASBO dealt your way.

And wherever there is some spare land they end up building a house on it or turning it into a car park.

So the way we are heading we have got the future all wrong.

All those Star Trek episodes need to be re-written because by the 25th century only vulcans will be thin and the rest of us - clinically obese.
