IT’S good to know that the ‘Red Duster’ will be flown on today at Merchant Navy Day to acknowledge the huge losses suffered in 1939-45 as they bravely faced being torpedoed, bombed or blown up by mines in order to bring vital supplies of food to our shores and armaments to the armed forces.

Merchant seamen today still face many dangers as they sail the world to supply us with food and other everyday commodities.

Accidents and illnesses happen at sea. Piracy is an ever-present risk with ships and crews being held for ransom.

Seamen may be abandoned by some uncaring ship owners. Who can they turn to for help?

Well there are two organisations The Mission to Seafarers and The Apostleship of the Sea, both of which provide advice, practical aid and care for seafarers around the world.

Please contact either of them via the internet to find out how you can support their work and show that you really care about the Merchant Navy.
