The Limes English Dry White 2013, £7.99, Waitrose

Dorking in Surrey wouldn’t be most people’s idea of a wine producing centre, but Denbies have been making it there for almost 30 years. The reputation of English wine, particularly dry white, has grown enormously recently and this is a cracking 11.5% blend made for the supermarket chain. Lemon and lime are the main flavours and the price is really good.

Riqueza Pinot Noir 2014, £8.99, Waitrose

Another country whose wine is rather overshadowed by its neighbours is Brazil where exporters have to compete worldwide with Chile and Argentina. But the small rolling hills of the southern Campanha region are ideal for Pinot Noir grapes and this plummy number is pleasantly mellow, 13% alcohol and cheaper than many rivals of equal quality.
