RE, DISGRACE: Anger at plan to replace East Lancashire rolling stock with Tube trains There are times when living in the North where one feels that we’re in some sort of big charity shop.
I wouldn’t automatically reject the idea of refurbishing railway stock in this way – it’s been done many times before over the years.
Having said that reconfiguring from electric to diesel power makes this such a major overhaul one wonders whether paying for new frames, bogies and carriage might be better.
I may be wrong here, but are the Pacers used currently on the East Lancashire Line not cast-offs? In other words, there is a long-standing tradition in this neck of the woods of us having to wear ‘second hand jumpers’.
