On many occasions I have read through your columns complaints about the hospitals at Blackburn and Burnley.

On Monday I had surgery at the Burnley hospital and have to report first class service.

The hospital and all the staff were splendid. The building was clean and bright, clearly well maintained.

I did not taste the food as I was in theatre at lunchtime. However in the recovery ward I had two cups of the best coffee I have tasted for a long time.

The locker system for your clothes etc is first class. They even carried my bag for me. This hospital really is first class. Thank you to you all.

I’m always reading headlines of terrible stories at East Lancashire hospitals but it’s time someone stood up for the nurses.

I’ve recently come out of Royal Blackburn Hospital where I was a patient for a week.

The nurses there were fantastic. They work long hours and they work really hard. I wanted to let everyone know how brilliant they were. I wrote them a poem which was framed and left at the hospital.

Another little word about nurses. When I registered in 1958 we paid a small fee and were registered for life.

Thirty years later we were asked to re-register every three years and pay £20 each time.

When my registration ran out I resigned in disgust. The last I heard nurses now have to register every year for a fee of £100.
