WHEREVER did Elaine Whalley get the idea that I said that doctors and nurses are idle and lazy? (Letters, January 19, The health staff are not lazy). I did not use those words or even imply them. My contention is that technology and paperwork have taken over in the NHS.

I have personal knowledge that nurses are so pushed that they do not get their proper breaks and do hours of unpaid overtime to catch up on paperwork. It’s not their fault. Furthermore, if there were enough beds they would not need to spend a long time on the phone to free up beds for patients waiting to be admitted.
