A VICTORY for the Lancashire Telegraph’s Turn The Lights On Campaign has been a long time coming.

Concerns from motorists, politicians and east Lancashire’s coroner have done little to persuade highways bosses about the necessity to switch the M65 motorway lights back on — until now.

Plans to re-illuminate of one the county’s most dangerous slip roads is very much a victory. In just 18 months, three people lost their life between junctions eight and ten.

These small improvements will no doubt save lives.

Motorists who travel on the M65 at night must take extra precautions around safety until we win our battle.

For Highways Agency bosses to announce they plan to upgrade the junction-eight slip road at Huncoat by repairing and then replacing lights, they must also share our concerns.

The investment of £325,000 on high-tech white lines and cat’s eyes will improve night-time visibility — and that is good news. But campaigners must not lose sight of what our fight is about.

The LancashireTelegraph is campaigning for drivers’ safety.

So come on East Lancashire — let us keep campaigning until highways bosses put safety over cost and switch the lights back on.
