A NEW scheme to give residents more choice in choosing their energy suppliers is very sensible.

Energy companies are continually hiking their prices which is hitting the poorest people in our communities who can ill afford soaring bills.

But now Burnley Council could become one of the first to tackle the issue with a price comparison scheme.

It will help hundreds of people who are facing fuel poverty in East Lancashire which could see bills slashed by between £150 and £200.

Under the moves, customers are signed up in bulk, so a comparision company can stage a ‘reverse auction’ with an energy supplier.

Residents would then be signed up for a fixed period, probably a year, and should benefit from a reduced price for their gas and electricity supply. There would be no need to get a new meter or new equipment at home.

At this time of year, when temperatures are plummeting and people are turning up their heating, it is vital they are given all the right information so they don’t pay more than they should.

Let us hope other authorities sign up to the scheme so customers can make an informed choice and shop around for the best quote.
