A PIONEER of cosmochemistry has been made an honorary citizen of Todmorden by town councillors.
Professor Grenville Turner’s work on space rocks has led to a greater understanding of the solar system, but he has never forgotten his Todmorden roots.
He was educated at Todmorden Grammar School, before studying at St John’s College, Cambridge, and Balliol College, Oxford.
Today though officially retired, he is still a professor of isotope geochemistry at the University of Manchester, after a career which has seen him study at Berkeley, Caltech, and work as a consultant for NASA, and the British National Space Centre.
A Todmorden Town Council spokesman said the award was in recognition of his personal achievements, which had promoted the town’s name internationally.
