RESIDENTS in Todmorden are being warned about a phone scam in which callers say they are working for the police.

Rogue callers are contacting households in Calderdale seeking advertising for a fake crime prevention leaflet.

The claim, made on behalf of either ‘police’ or the former ‘police authority’, is that people, or firms, can secure an advert for a £95 payment.

But police bosses said they do not tout for business in that way, and the police authority was also replaced by a Police and Crime Commissioner’s office last year.

Police Commissioner Mark Burns-Williamson said: “I am always concerned to hear about people trying to obtain money through scams, but more so on this occasion when the offenders are trying to pass themselves off as being from the police, or the former police authority.”
