THOUSANDS of pages and millions of words were read by pupils and staff from Fearns Community Sports College in Stacksteads in one week.

During Reading Challenge Week, the first lesson of every day at the school in Fearns Moss was dedicated to reading.

From PE lessons to cookery, science to Spanish, students read in silence for an hour.

Rebecca Roach, literacy co-ordinator at the school, said: “This is an annual reading challenge which is looked forward to by staff and pupils alike.

“It has been proven that daily reading improves academic achievement. It is known that when children get to their teenage years the amount they read often reduces. At Fearns we want to encourage pupils to have a life-long love of books.

“We encourage reading right from the start. Even before Year 7s start here they are given a literacy passport to complete in the summer to smooth the transition from primary to secondary school.”

Fearns is one of the few northern schools to be an associate member of the Prince Charles’ Teaching Institute for English, which encourages schools to share good practice.
