TROUBLESOME toenails were given the chop at a free session for over-55s.

NHS East Lancashire’s Falls Prevention Team hosted the event at Haslingden Community Link and Children’s Centre.

The afternoon was primarily aimed at putting an end to toe-curling problems that can hamper people’s mobility.

But participants were also pampered with Indian head massages and treated to tea and biscuits while members of the fire service, police and Help Direct gave advice on safety and other free services.

Yvonne Skellern, of the Falls Prevention Team, said: “I know it sounds a bit odd but it’s a problem a lot of people, mainly older people, people with disabilities and people who just can’t reach their toes, have.

"The nails just grow and grow. It makes your shoes uncomfortable and can cause you to limp.

"There have been people who have come in on crutches and after their toenails have been cut, walked out without them.”

Foot care services company Caremart provided two assistants at the event.

Area boss Colin Gribble said: “A lot of people are scared to go to what they think may be costly chiropodists, but when there are things in the community like this, they don’t need to be scared.”

Frances Judson, 83, of Bury Road, is unable to cut her own toenails after surgery to remove the nerves in her feet.

She said: “I’ve been told not to cut them myself, in case I cut my toes off!

"I have a chiropodist of my own who I pay £23 when I go to see her, which is pretty often.

"But I've been told I can have this service for £6 here or £9 if they come to my home.”
