A Ramsbottom firm is shaking up the sauce market after landing a deal with a superstore giant.

David Entwistle is supplying Asda stores across the county with bottles of his tasty Lancashire Sauce.

And if the product hits the spot with customers, it could be rolled out to stores across the country.

David said he was passed the recipe from his grandmother Mary Elizabeth Entwistle, who died in 1977, said it was 'a proud moment'.

But he is keeping tight-lipped on the secret of his success.

He said: “I can’t tell you what’s in the sauce apart from herbs and spices that will improve any savoury dish.

"Asda contacted me a few months ago asking if they could start stocking our sauce.

"It was a really proud moment for me and my family.

“The first time I saw it on the shelves was a really strange moment.

“Its great. We are accessible to people who struggle to reach independent stores during the day."

The sauce is available in more than 300 independent retailers, some as far as Bahrain and Dubai.

So far Asda have ordered around 2,500 bottles of sauce and another batch of 1,250 bottles will be on its way soon.

David, who has been making the sauce on his own for six years at Entwistle’s delicatessen in Bridge Street, Ramsbottom, said: “I hope regular users keep an eye out for the sauce.

“And for those who have never tried it, I urge them to try it in their soup or on their fish and chips, as it will really bring out the flavour.

“If sales do well at Asda there could be the opportunity to roll it out nationwide, which is really exciting.”

The sauce which can be used as a condiment to enhance the taste of food is a combination of spices and basic ingredients.

Currently around 30,000 bottles a year are produced and cost £1.61 each.

The famous flavour has also been captured in a packet of crisps after a potato farmer from Ormskirk tried the sauce in Burscough.

The crisps are on sale at the delicatessen, in pubs and local shops.
