A FIREBUG caused hundreds of pounds-worth of damage after setting fire to a special pitch cover at Bacup Cricket Club.

The arsonist torched the state-of-the-art cricket pitch cover, which the club estimates will cost around £1,000 to replace.

Senior batsman and former captain Tim Farragher slammed the vandals as ‘mindless’ and said he believed local youngsters were behind the damage.

The 32-year-old said: “Some youths have gone on the ground and burned a new cover we got from a grant during the summer last year.

“The club worked really hard to get this grant and improve the facilities for people in the local area, and it’s really disappointing. I’m sure this was not a personal, but just general, mindless vandalism.”

Not having the cover could lead to games being delayed, halted, or even postponed.
