ROSSENDALE & Pendle Mountain Rescue Team has announced the purchase of a new base on the edge of Burnley after a 30-year fundraising campaign.

The campaign has raised £130,000 which has been put towards buying the building in Farrington Court. The move is hailed as a major step forward in the service provided by the team.

The team, which has 37 volunteers, will retain its main base in Clegg Street, Haslingden, where up to two ambulances can be stored.

Bosses say operational capabilities will be enhanced with the addition of the second base because emergency vehicles will now be stationed closer to the M65.

The new satellite base will be developed as further funds are raised, with the aim of upgrading security, providing an indoor rope training area and classroom and the installation of electrics to allow for the vehicles’ batteries to be charged while not in use. The base will also be used to provide training sessions for local Scouts, Cubs, Guides and community groups.

Team leader Peter Goble said: “With this new unit in Farrington Court we will be able to store all our emergency vehicles inside and protect them from the elements.

“Over the last four years we have raised funds to replace the whole fleet. By storing the vehicles inside, their life expectancy will be extended.”

Chairman Andy Simpson said: “This is an exciting development and will improve the voluntary public service that we provide to the community for free, as well as improving the long-term sustainability of the team.”
