PREPARATIONS are underway for a summer music festival in the Ribble Valley.

The Whalley Live 2012 festival, which will take place at venues throughout the village, will coincide with Whalley’s celebrations for the Queen’s diamond jubilee.

The weekend’s lineup is made up of local musicians including seven piece band Junction 31 and 16-year-old Clitheroe pianist Tobias Illingworth, who will be playing sets on the Friday and Saturday.

The gigs will take place in all four of the village’s pubs - The De Lacy Arms, The Dog Inn, The Swan and The Whalley Arms - and at the village hall and Whalley Arms carpark.

Margaret Twist, one of the events organisers said that the village had planned to hold a street party to mark the queen’s jubilee but had opted for the music festival instead.

She said: “There are lots of things being done.

“Hopefully lots of people will turn up - it was busy last year and I am determined to get lots of people involved.”

Gillian Darbyshire, from the Whalley Chamber of Trade, said the group was fully backing the festival.

She said: “We organised this event last year and we had about 1,000 people.

“It was a really good event and people really enjoyed it and a lot of local people came and supported us, as well as visitors to the area.

“What we are hoping for is to celebrate every year and offer some live music and a variety of other things to the community.

“The festival publicises Whalley and we are looking at more tourism as well as the local community joining in with these events.”
