A HISTORIC pub could become ‘nothing more than a shell’ if repair work is not done, according to a report.

The Punch Bowl Inn, in Longridge Road near Hurst Green, has been closed for some time and is the subject to a planning application o transform it into five holiday lets.

The proposal was sent to Ribble Valley Borough Council last month and a final decision is expected to be made by the end of the year.

In a historic building impact statement, it was judged the Grade II-listed site would ‘probably be uneconomic to repair’ if work was not completed.

The report said: “From external inspection the building is in a dilapidated but visually sound condition.

“However the property has suffered from considerable theft and vandalism.

“The only part of this building that retains architectural, historical or indeed visual merit is the front elevation into Longridge Road.

“We feel that the benefits to the listed building of these proposals outweigh any detrimental impact on the setting.”

The report was put together by Bramley-Pate and Partners.
