A DAD-OF-THREE who ‘feared for his life’ after almost being hit by a white van has called for motorists to take more care on rural roads.

Cllr Ged Mirfin, who represents Billington on Ribble Valley Council, broke down in tears after diving out of the way of a van when it came ‘within inches’ of him on a zebra crossing in Whalley Road on Monday.

The political blogger said the van appeared to speed up and swerve in his direction before driving away.

Cllr Mirfin said it took him back to 2014 when he broke his leg in two places and suffered a serious head injury after being hit by a car on the same road as he walked his son to school.

He said: “I was terrified. I just stood in shock afterwards. He was within inches of me.

“I can’t get my head around what was going through the driver’s mind when he decided to do that.

“I’m a nervous pedestrian at the best of times because of what happened last time and this has put me back to square one.

“Something needs to be done about these reckless drivers. I’ve been injured before and was almost injured again.

“We need something like CCTV cameras, speed cameras, a pelican crossing with lights.

“I’m thankful for the two ladies who pulled in afterwards to check if I was alright.”

A police spokesman said they were called at 4.45pm after a man reported a near miss with a white van in Whalley Road.

He said: “We advice people to report erratic driving, dangerous loads, unroadworthy vehicles or hazards on the road by phoning 999 as soon as they safely can.

“They should write down the registration number of any vehicle involved, with a description of the make, colour and, if possible, who was driving.”

Lancashire County Council have been made aware of the incident but were unavailable to comment.
