Other schools in East Lancashire have already handed their students tablets including Pleckgate High School in Blackburn and Accrington Academy.

Ribblesdale said that it chose the Microsoft product because of its “widespread use” of Windows operating systems in education and in the workplace.

A school spokesman said: “Ribblesdale High School has always endeavoured to be at the forefront of technology and its use in education.

“Both within and outside the classroom, the school embraces technology to enhance the learning of pupils.

“The aim of this project would be to enhance the outstanding teaching and learning which is already taking place within school.

“A number of other educational establishments have already embarked upon this journey, a range of which we have consulted with directly when formulating our way forward.

“During this process we have considered a wide range of technologies and devices, ranging from Apple iPads, Android tablets, through to a range of Windows-based devices such as the Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga.”

“It will help provide pupils with the IT-based skills they will inevitably require in their future careers.

“The Surface is more than just a tablet. It not only allows you to research information, but because it has all the features and capabilities of a full sized laptop, work can easily be produced.”

In September is was announced that Rhyddings Business and Enterprise School in Oswaldtwistle would give its students iPad Minis.

Ribblesdale High School is to hold a parent workshop in Tuesday, November 10, to seek their views on the introduction of the devices.

It will be staged from 6pm and for more information visit ribblesdale.org.
